Have you ever seen Nelson’s tram tracks like this?

This rare photo looks down Kootenay Street from the top of its steep 13.5% grade, and it was likely taken around the turn of the century. The hand-written caption even marks the curve where Car #2 was wrecked.

Nelson’s tram began service on December 27, 1899, but this uphill section didn’t open until April 8, 1900, after the Car #2 derailment delayed it. The steep grade was abandoned in 1901, when the tracks were rerouted to Stanley Street.

Nelson once ran the smallest streetcar fleet in the British Empire, and you can still ride restored Streetcar #23 along the waterfront today.

Take a look at this incredible photo of 502 Vernon Street, now home to the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery. It was taken in 1902 while the building was under construction for its original purpose as the Federal Post Office.

The materials tell the story of the region. The pink brick came all the way from Spokane, the marble from Kaslo, and the granite from right here in the Nelson area.

Look closely and you'll also spot a piece of our original streetcar system. It began service in 1899 and ran until 1949.
