🌍 Happy World Environment Day.

Today, people around the world are reflecting on the signals our planet is sending, and what we choose to do about them.

At CAGBC, our answer has always been the same: build better.

Better buildings use less energy, produce fewer emissions, and create healthier spaces for the people inside them. And across Canada, 7,022 certified buildings are already proving that's possible - in every province and territory, across 21 different building types, from schools and hospitals to homes and community centres.

Climate action happens at every scale. Sometimes it starts with the building you're sitting in right now.

💬 What does climate action look like in your community? 🍁

The materials we build with matter just as much as how we design and operate buildings—especially when it comes to carbon.

Concrete and cement remain foundational to the built environment, but they also represent a significant source of embodied emissions. That’s why innovation in this space is gaining attention as Canada works toward its climate targets.

A CAGBC Market Primer explores Carbon Capture and Utilization in Cementitious Building Materials (CCU-CBM) and the potential role it could play in reducing emissions from this essential sector.

The report brings together research and stakeholder insights to:

✅ Introduce CCU-CBM technologies and how they work
✅Summarize where these solutions currently stand in Canada
✅Explore how they could support the decarbonization of the building sector

As Canada advances climate action across industries, no single solution will be enough—progress will require an “all-in” approach, including materials innovation.

Artificial intelligence is growing fast, and so is the need for the data centres that power it.

These buildings can require significant energy and water, which is why WorldGBC and global partners have launched a new coalition focused on defining more sustainable data centres.

As digital infrastructure expands, it’s an important conversation for Canada’s built environment - from cleaner energy to smarter design and long-term resilience.

The future can be digital and sustainable. 🌎🏢💡

A meaningful update to is helping ensure that Indigenous cultural practices are respected in green buildings.

A new interpretation clarifies that ceremonial uses of to***co, an important part of many Indigenous traditions, are not restricted under LEED’s to***co smoke control requirements.
This change, developed through collaboration between CAGBC and the U.S. Green Building Council, helps ensure that sustainability standards also make space for cultural practices.

🦅 Did you know that millions of birds in Canada are lost each year due to collisions with buildings?

v5 is taking steps to change that, encouraging more bird-friendly building design and helping project teams create spaces that better coexist with nature.

Curious how this works in practice? Read more about how bird-friendly design like using safer glass and being mindful of lighting is being integrated into buildings across Canada: with a new Regional Alternative Compliance path: https://ow.ly/321Z50YQJk4
