Real estate has been part of some of the biggest transitions in my life.

I’ve bought and sold homes. I’ve navigated separation, rented while I figured out my next step, raised two kids through a major life change, and learned firsthand how emotional housing decisions can be when your life is shifting underneath you.

If you’ve been dreaming of homeownership but feel sidelined by rising costs, the Quebec government has just delivered some much-needed relief. Starting January 1, 2026, first-time homebuyers can receive a refundable tax credit of up to $5,875 to help offset the cost of the “welcome tax” (land transfer duties).

When we think about the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), or in La Belle Province, the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP), we usually think about years spent in the office, on a job site, or running a business. We picture the contributions taken off our paycheques and the steady work history required to build a comfortable retirement. But for many Canadians, there is a significant piece of the pension puzzle that often goes completely missing.

Stop guessing, start knowing!
