Canadian inflation saw a split report for April!
While the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 2.8% (up from 2.4% in March), primarily due to high energy and gasoline prices (up 28.6% year-over-year), the crucial news is the continued softening of underlying price pressures.

The Bank of Canada’s preferred core inflation measures—which strip out volatility—decelerated, with the average of the trim and median metrics falling to 2.05%. This is the lowest level since January 2021.

Bottom Line: Broader price pressures are easing alongside soft labor market conditions. This data is consistent with the view that the Bank of Canada will likely remain on the sidelines for the rest of 2026
