🌊 Gardiner Dam Spillway Open for the First Time Since 2020!

A rare sight is drawing attention at Lake Diefenbaker this week as the spillway gates at Gardiner Dam have been opened for the first time in six years. Recent Alberta rainfall has pushed inflows into Lake Diefenbaker high enough that the Water Security Agency began spillway operations on June 10.

📍 Some interesting facts:
• Gardiner Dam is one of the largest earth-filled dams in the world.
• The dam stretches nearly 5 km long and stands 64 m high.
• It created Lake Diefenbaker, Saskatchewan’s largest reservoir and a critical source of drinking water, irrigation, recreation, and hydroelectric power.
• The spillway can release massive volumes of water when required to manage reservoir levels.

The current release is expected to increase flows on the South Saskatchewan River significantly, creating a dramatic display of water rarely seen in recent years.
