Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has released its 2026 Mortgage Consumer Survey report, which uncovers the latest trends, priorities and expectations shaping mortgage and homebuying decisions across the country.
Key highlights include:
Mortgage consumers feel confident about their financial health and mortgage decisions
Fewer believe the value of their home will increase over the next 12 months, while still seeing it as a good long-term financial investment
33% of mortgage consumers used interest rate comparison sites to get mortgage information, 32% used mortgage broker sites and 31% used lender sites
Less homebuyers experienced uncertainty or concerns during the homebuying process
Concerns about defaulting on mortgage payments dropped down to 39%, from 53% in 2025
