Augusta.

Home to a gorgeous, pristine golf course that hosts the year’s first major golf tournament. For a sports fan like myself, the sights to see are truly spectacular, from the huge trees, the rolling fairways, the white sand bunkers and thousands of colourful flowers all over.

It’s my favourite golf tournament to watch, and I look forward to it every year.

Here at home, we are starting to see the signs of spring, although it’s more like random April snow storms, muddy roads, melting drifts of snow, and spring run off that starts kicking in those sump pumps.

We still have a bit more time to wait before the blooms begin and the trees start to bud. But as we wait, it’s a great time to start thinking about how to make your yard look just a bit more like the beauty of Augusta National.

After all, some courses are ho-hum, and then there’s Augusta. We all remember it once we see it. Your yard can be just as memorable with a bit of work and some great choices.

And while most of us aren’t curating golf courses, it’s hard to argue what a well manicured yard can do for curb appeal and market value. Consider adding some perennials, shrubs or maybe even a few new trees. If you’re a golfer, consider a putting green if you’re working on your game!

I have some landscaping work ahead of me this summer. I’ll be tuning in this weekend looking for inspiration (and wondering why I can’t hit my drive 350 yards!!). If you’re stumped as to what to do with your yard, reach out, I’d love to chat about it.

The good old hockey game!

As Stompin’ Tom has sung in every arena around - it’s the best game you can name! Throughout my life, I’ve played my fair share of hockey – playing minor hockey growing up, intramurals in University, and a whole bunch of rec league in my adult years.

The past few years, the skates have found the ice less and less – until this week. I played in two ag-industry hockey “tourneys” over the past week, both supporting great causes – the Make A Wish Foundation & the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

We are fortunate in Manitoba, and especially the Southeast, to have such a vibrant industry that forms the roots of our communities, works hard and gets involved, and also are ready to give back! These events raised tens of thousands of dollars to support kids care – something important to me as our family has made a few visits to Children’s Hospital over the years.

When it comes to choosing a place to live and call home, I believe it’s important to align with the values of that community, and be proud of your home town and what it represents. I enjoy being involved, giving back, and in this case, being part of something that benefits so many kids that need help.

A tip of the helmet to the folks that organized the Ag Industry Grain Challenge in Winnipeg & the Pre-Seed Shinny Tournament in St Jean. Amazing job!

The bonus over the weekend – getting to play on a line with my son for the first time! I mean, he’s got better hands, and faster feet than his old man, but there’s something special about sharing the great game with him and making memories.

Hockey & giving back – Truly Canadian, Truly Manitoban.

Truly, the best game you can name.

I’m a billionaire!

Seriously, I am. Many of you are too!

To be clear, I most definitely do not have a billion dollars, which is what most of us would think when we hear “billionaire”. But what I do have, is much more valuable.

A billion seconds left, a billion ticks of the clock -- give or take (hopefully) -- to leave a mark on this earth.

When we think of wealth, we often will automatically think of our net worth statement – how much money we have vs how much money we owe. As I get older, and as life teaches me that I have to get wiser, my definition of “wealth” has evolved and changed.

Of course, having the dollars & cents to purchase a home, feed our families, and have some fun is pretty important to having a fulfilling life. After all, it’s one of the main drivers of purchasing a home – to build equity for our future – and provide stability for our families.

In reality, having the seconds & sense to live wisely, is where our wealth really lies and where we find the most meaning.

Over the past year, I have been doing some life reflections - adjusting, changing & eliminating some habits in how I spend my precious wealth. To waste less of it, and focus on what enriches it – faith, family, & health.

Thanks for spending some of your precious seconds with me. It has been a while but It was time - Thursday Thoughts are back. I truly hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it.

The next time you feel the day dragging along, take a few of those seconds, refocus, and just remember that the joy comes from the way we use our most valuable resource – time.
