September 30th is a day to remember, reflect, and honour.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to honour the children who never returned home, recognize Residential School Survivors, and remember the families, communities, and Nations whose strength and resilience continue across generations.

As an Indigenous led, not-for-profit social enterprise founded by Chapleau Cree First Nation, Missanabie Cree First Nation, and Brunswick House First Nation, One Bowl is grounded in the values, knowledge, and priorities that come from community.

We recognize why community-led solutions matter.

Why building skills and capacity matters.

Why language, culture, land, homes, and self-determination matter.

These values shape how we work alongside the communities we partner with and continue to learn from the knowledge shared across generations. We also recognize the strength, knowledge and resilience that has endured.

Community-based development is taking shape in Missanabie Cree First Nation, one of One Bowl’s founding Nations.

This is the second year of Thermolog training in community, with two training programs happening this year alongside the construction of seven new Thermolog homes.

While trainees completed their first week of Health & Safety training, the construction site was moving forward alongside them. Foundations for the first homes are now complete, and this past week, the first two of seven planned Thermolog kits arrived on site.

These Thermolog kits are set to be constructed in community. With the groundwork in place, the first two kits set the stage for the next three weeks of hands-on Thermolog training, where trainees can put their learning into practice as construction progresses.

Additional kits will arrive each week, creating new training grounds as work progresses toward all seven homes.

It’s an exciting first construction milestone: foundations are complete, the first kits are here, and hands-on training is moving forward alongside construction in community.

There’s something special about watching a group learn together. The questions, the encouragement, the laughter, and the moments when someone steps up without hesitation.

That’s what stood out during the first week of the 2026 Thermolog Training Program in Missanabie Cree First Nation.

Ten trainees came together within Missanabie Cree First Nation to begin their training journey, starting with a week of hands-on Health & Safety learning. Important skills were being built every day, but some of our favourite moments were the ones that showed the personalities behind the program.

During Working at Heights training, Conlan became part of the obstacle course when he stepped in as a “tree” that trainees had to navigate around using their dual tethering systems. Charlie brought her own personality to the exercise, channeling Jack from Titanic while working her way through the course.

First Aid training brought just as much commitment. Lori and Steven worked together to “save Timmy,” the CPR training doll. Alysha made sure her role as a patient with second-degree burns felt as realistic as possible. And when Jesseca stepped into a scenario with an injured eye, Blythe was right there, ready to assess the situation and put what he had learned into action.

There was a lot of learning packed into the week, but something else was taking shape too: trust.

People supported one another, got comfortable trying something new, shared a few laughs, and became more confident with every exercise. That matters.

At One Bowl, we believe building homes and building capacity go hand in hand. Training like this is about more than learning how to use a tool or respond in an emergency. It’s about creating opportunities, strengthening knowledge and skills within community, and building confidence that remains long after the training is complete.

Now, these ten trainees are moving into three weeks of hands-on Thermolog construction training. They’ll continue learning alongside one another while putting those skills into practice on seven homes within their community.

The homes are an important part of this work. So are the people building them.

Week One showed what this crew is capable of, and they’re just getting started.

We’re happy to showcase Xpert Contracting for their participation in our most recent hands-on Thermolog Training Program in Timmins, Ontario.

From April 27 to May 1, Xpert Contracting was on site participating in structured training and practical installation work within the Thermolog training framework, successfully completing the requirements for Level 1 certification.

Xpert Contracting operates under the Morin Group umbrella as part of Morin Capital Incorporated, based in Timmins, Ontario. Since beginning operations in 2023, the company has provided a wide range of contracting and construction services, including new construction, residential and commercial renovations, bathroom and kitchen projects, doors, windows, flooring, general carpentry, excavation, and road construction.

We appreciate their participation in the program and their contribution to building a collaborative, hands-on training environment.

On May 14, 2026, Jill of All Trades welcomed One Bowl to Northern College for their event at the Timmins campus.

Jill of All Trades is designed to introduce young women, primarily students in Grades 9 through 12, to careers in the skilled trades through hands-on learning, mentorship, and direct exposure to what work in construction, carpentry, welding, electrical, and other trades actually looks and feels like.

Throughout the day, One Bowl facilitated three separate 45-minute sessions focused on tool usage, construction site safety, and Thermolog construction. Participants worked with power tools and assembled Thermolog wall sections, completing real builds in a guided, hands-on environment. Each session emphasized teamwork, confidence-building, and practical experience while working through a real construction workflow from start to finish.

The sessions brought together students with a wide range of experience levels. Some participants had never used power tools before and gained confidence as they developed new skills throughout the activities. Others arrived with previous hands-on experience and naturally stepped into leadership and support roles, encouraging their peers and contributing to a collaborative learning environment.

We are grateful to Jill of All Trades for the opportunity to be part of this initiative and are proud to contribute to inspiring the next generation of skilled trades professionals.

Heritage North Electric is an First Nations-owned electrical contractor based in Timmins, Ontario, with roots in Chapleau Cree First Nation. Their work spans industrial, commercial, and residential sectors and is grounded in a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, sustainability, and community development. With extensive regional experience and a strong focus on trades mentorship and apprenticeship development, their team continues to help strengthen skilled trades capacity within Northern communities.

During our most recent Thermolog Training Program, Heritage North Electric provided full electrical installation for the training build. Their team ensured the mini unit was fully powered, functional, and ready for hands-on learning while also guiding participants through how electrical systems integrate within the Thermolog build process.

The 2026 Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) Conference took place in Timmins from May 11 to 13, bringing together municipal leaders, industry partners, and organizations from across Northern Ontario.

Our team attended both as delegates and exhibitors, participating in discussions focused on northern infrastructure, housing, and community development while engaging directly with municipal, provincial, and federal leaders throughout the conference. These conversations provided valuable insight into the real housing challenges communities are currently facing, from land availability and servicing vacant lots to the growing demand for stronger, long-term housing solutions designed for Northern conditions.

One Bowl’s presence included both a booth on the arena floor and a mini Thermolog unit positioned outside as a mobile meeting and demonstration space. The structure created a hands-on opportunity for attendees to step inside, experience the space firsthand, and take part in more in-depth discussions around how the system works in practical, real-world applications.

Throughout the three-day event, the Thermolog unit became an active hub for tours, meetings, and ongoing conversations with leadership teams, stakeholders, and community representatives. Bringing a physical structure on site allowed us to move beyond high-level discussions and demonstrate a practical, scalable housing solution focused on speed of delivery, energy performance, and long-term sustainability for Northern and Indigenous communities.

The level of engagement across the event reinforced what we already know: housing remains one of the most urgent priorities across Northern Ontario. For One Bowl, FONOM 2026 was about showing up, building relationships, and contributing to the conversations helping shape the future of housing across the North.

We’re pleased to recognize Missinaibi Drilling Services Ltd. for their participation in our most recent hands-on Thermolog Training Program in Timmins, Ontario.

This year’s participation builds on their involvement from last year’s program, with two new team members stepping into the training and successfully completing the hands-on requirements toward Level 1 Thermolog certification.

They are mentors, teachers, role models, and steady sources of support. Through their actions, they pass down lessons, values, and experiences that help shape future generations.
