The most dangerous thing at a Canadian workplace is that everybody likes you.Great to work with. So reliable. Such a team player. You hear it for years and you stay exactly where you are.

Nobody is rude to you here, so nobody ever tells you that you are not being considered. You get a tough year and bad timing instead, and you go home feeling fine about it. Being good at your job is the entry fee, not the thing that moves you.

Somebody has to speak for your work, and if that is not you, it is nobody.Every one of us has heard one of these. Tough year. Timing was not right. We see big things for you. Which one did you get?

A lot of you own property in India and rent in Canada, and nobody has made you look at those two things side by side.It made sense at the time.

Property back home felt safe, family pushed for it, and it was cheaper than anything here. Now it sits empty or a cousin is in it, you pay maintenance in Canadian dollars, and the value climbs on paper in a currency you do not spend. Meanwhile you are renting here telling yourself you missed the market. You did not miss it.

You need Canadian experience for the job and the job for the Canadian experience.Sometimes it is a real gap in systems and software.

Sometimes it is a polite way of saying we do not know how to read your resume, and you cannot fix that one by applying harder. One Canadian name on the resume, even a contract, even a step down.

A certification recognised on sight. One human inside a company who passes your resume along. None of it is fair. You are doing extra work to prove something you already proved.If you are in this loop, comment where you are at.

Some of the worst treatment Indians get in Canada comes from other Indians, and nobody wants to say it.

The cash job under minimum wage. The landlord charging four hundred over market because he knows you have no credit history. The consultant charging thousands for a resume. They speak your language and ask about your family, and that is exactly why it works, because you trust faster and you feel rude negotiating with an uncle. Most of our community is not doing this. But we stay quiet about the ones who are, so the same play runs on the next batch that lands.

Someone else’s mortgage can end up on your credit file if you share a name with them. A proposed class action filed in Canada against Equifax and TransUnion involves exactly that, where one person’s file picked up a mortgage belonging to a different person with the same name.

The case has not been authorized yet and the allegations are unproven, and Equifax denies fault. The part that matters either way is that a common name is a real risk, and you will not know until a lender pulls your file.

Pull your report from both bureaus. It is free. Send this to someone with a common last name.

Two hours. No phone, no noise, no outside world.

Back in February I bought a ticket to Bhuwin’s show because one of his reels had been stuck in my head for weeks. I walked in expecting a concert. Then I found out he doesn’t just sing, he tells stories, and the songs sit in between them. I’ve always loved storytelling, so I was sold before he even walked on stage.
And then he started.

I still can’t explain what he does to you in those two hours. You get cut off. From the noise, the traffic, the notifications, the performance all of us put on for each other every day. You’re just there, in the moment, feeling exactly what he wants you to feel.
He does the entire thing alone. Vocals, drums, every layer, built live in front of you with live looping. High notes, low notes, that deep voice, a range that keeps catching you off guard. Goosebumps, again and again.

Yesterday I went back, this time at Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Same show. Noor-e-Daastan. Same title, same structure, a few songs swapped out from February. Here’s the part I didn’t expect: it didn’t feel like a repeat. I got just as lost in my own head. His ability to make you time travel is unreal.

We live so fast that we forget to live the small moments. The small things that used to be enough. He makes you sit still long enough to remember them.
Second show, same show, and it still did full justice. If he announces another one, I’m going again.

To every Indian living abroad, this one’s for you.

They say we love India a little more once we leave it. I think that’s true. Distance doesn’t weaken it. It just makes you notice what you were carrying all along.

Because India gave us our values. The way we were raised to respect elders, to make room at the table, to show up for people without being asked.

It gave us our culture. The festivals we still celebrate here, the clothes we pull out for special occasions, the traditions we’re passing on to our kids in a country far from where they started.

And it gave us our language. The one we slip back into on the phone with our parents. The one we still count in. The one we dream in.

India gave me my roots. The world gave me wings. đź’ś

I’ve built a life in Canada and I’m grateful for every part of it. The opportunity, the fresh start, the people who made space for me here. This country has given me a lot.
