Some Friendly Bird feeding advice from our friend Guy Peters over at Humber Nurseries- Thanks Guy
Do you love having birds in your backyard? We do too! There is no denying that birdfeeders are awesome. They work great, they can be beautiful and festive, but we have to break it to you - there is an even better method of attracting birds. Planting native tree shrubs, plants, and grasses that bear fruit, nuts, and seeds on their own is by far the best method to having repeat, low maintenance, healthy food available for the birds. With that said we will tell you why - birdfeeders need maintenance. Since birdfeeders are a central hub for birds to acquire food they enable the spread and transmission of disease. Thus, birdfeeders must be cleaned regularly in order to actually aid birds rather than harm them. Furthermore, birds are notorious for becoming dependant on food sources provided by humans. This means that if the food in the birdfeeder runs out (perhaps when you’re gone on vacation or you just forget to change it) then the birds who have come to rely on that source of food may actually starve and die. It is a sad truth but that’s why we’re letting you know there are other options! Now if you are someone who loves your birdfeeder and regularly maintains it then keep on rockin’ and enjoy those birds! However, if you are a little too busy to add another thing to your maintenance list then consider planting to attract birds instead. We can help you pick out the perfect plants to attract all your favourite types of birds and remember that you can keep planting until the ground freezes!!
