Womanact WomanACT envisions a world where women are free from violence. See the Best Practice Guidelines.

WomanACT works collaboratively to eradicate violence against women through research, policy, education and community mobilization. The organization was founded upon the need to develop clear policy and procedures with respect to screening, identifying and intervening in woman abuse cases. This is essential because without policy development, each practitioner responds based on her/his own personal bias and discretion. Only through policy development that guides practice, can professional staff can be held accountable for their intervention. Over the years, as we have matured, the organization has moved into doing research, completed best practice guidelines, and created a number of powerful community education tools. Through our ongoing work we are continually exploring new issues and continuing to build community capacity by developing resources and tools for front line practitioners.

🚇 Make Toronto’s public spaces and transit safer

In a WomanACT's Study with Angus Reid Group, 86% of participants shared that they have experinced harassment on Toronto's public transit system (2022).

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their city. Toronto needs to build safety into transit, parks, libraries, recreation centres, and other public spaces, with meaningful input from survivors, women, and gender-diverse people.

WomanACT’s GBV Priorities for Toronto’s Upcoming Municipal Election

Safety means more than responding to violence after it happens. WomanACT is calling on municipal candidates to put gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response at the centre of Toronto’s Community Safety Strategy.

Toronto needs a coordinated approach that prevents violence, supports survivors, and addresses the systemic conditions that put people at risk.

Financial systems are not neutral.

They are shaped by broader social and gendered contexts—and by the different ways people experience power, control, and violence.

Gender inclusion in financial systems means more than equal access or representation. It means recognizing how experiences of gender-based violence and financial abuse can shape the way survivors interact with banks, technology, and financial services.

Building more inclusive systems requires a trauma-informed approach that centres safety, autonomy, and lived experience.

Election day is coming up! Make a plan that works for you and choose the voting option that fits your needs.

→ Vote by mail: Toronto Elections must receive completed Mail-in Voting packages by October 14 at noon (12 p.m.).

→ Advance voting: October 6–11, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

→ Election Day: Monday, October 26. Vote at your assigned polling station. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For people experiencing gender-based violence, these systems can make the difference between staying unsafe and being able to access safety, support and stability. From affordable and supportive housing, to accessible transit, responsive City services and funding for community-based organizations, what happens at City Hall affects how people experience safety and support across Toronto.

That’s why gender-based violence needs to be part of the municipal conversation.

Building safer, more accountable AI

Last month, WomanACT collected feedback from our members on AI transparency and technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). Thank you to everyone who participated and helped bring the expertise of the VAW sector and survivor experiences into this conversation.

WomanACT has submitted a response to the Government of Canada’s AI transparency consultation, highlighting the need for:

🔹 Survivor safety and privacy
🔹 Clear AI labelling and rapid removal of harmful content
🔹 Safety-by-design and platform accountability
🔹 Better tracking of AI-facilitated GBV
🔹 Meaningful involvement of survivors and the GBV sector

Transparency should be a foundation for accountability—not a substitute for it.
