Canada isn’t running out of space… but our building rules might be boxing families into it.

Outdated codes, rising construction costs, and restrictive zoning are pushing developers to build smaller and smaller units — and it’s squeezing out Canadians who actually need livable, family-friendly homes.

The irony? We’re in a housing crisis, yet the system is making it harder to build the type of homes people actually want.

If zoning modernized and approval timelines sped up, we’d see more 2–3 bedroom units, more mid-rise options, and more attainable paths to homeownership.
