I went to Greece thinking my Yaya was the sweetest woman alive.

Then I watched her call over her chickens, talk to them like they were her babies… and casually snap one’s neck for dinner.

I yelled, “Yaya, what the f**k?!”

She was more offended by my language than I was by the murder.

“F**K?! YOU SAY F**K?!” — and slapped me with the same hand she just killed the chicken with. 😂

First trip to Greece. First real lesson in village life.

And yes… we ate the chicken.

Funny how the things that meant the least to you as a kid can end up meaning the most when you get older.

For me, it was recess at Wilkinson Public School, a Sweet Marie in the schoolyard, and my Yiayia. I’d give anything to have all three one more time. ❤️

Funny how the things that seemed so ordinary when you were a kid end up being the things you’d give anything to experience one more time.

A 10-minute walk from Wilkinson to Woodycrest. Simple Greek food. My Nuno speaking Greek to me whether I understood him or not. My Nuna giving him s**t for it. A Coke for me, an Amstel for him.

44 years later, I can still see that kitchen table.

If you grew up Greek in the East End, I’m guessing some part of this feels familiar.

Growing up half Greek just off the Danforth meant I was surrounded by Greek culture… while understanding about 12% of what anyone was actually saying. 😂

I still don’t know exactly what my Yaya said to that priest the next day. I just know we went from being refused a blessing to getting our own private one.

Never underestimate a Greek grandmother on a mission.

And apparently, “Deriko” is NOT my Greek name. 😂

19 years married today.

Marriage isn’t always romantic dinners, vacations and anniversary posts. Sometimes it’s laughing together, sometimes it’s carrying each other, and sometimes it’s not speaking for two days because neither one of you is willing to admit you were wrong.

Fiona carried us through the early years while I figured my life and career out, and I’ll never forget that.

We’ve had some incredible highs, we’ve had some s**tty days, and somehow we’ve managed to keep choosing each other through all of it.

I wouldn’t want to do the ups and downs with anyone else.

Happy anniversary, Fiona. ❤️

And for the record, I’m pretty sure I was right most of those times we weren’t speaking.

Almost 20 years in the same house, both our names on title, and somehow part of me still thinks of it as my wife’s house.

She thinks I’m completely ridiculous.

And after making this reel, I may have just handed her an argument she can use against me for the next 20 years.

Saturdays are meant for girls rugby.

Regional finals for girls under 16 was today in Niagara. Long drive there and incredibly long drive back.

Brought our silly dog and she showed us why she needs to be run constantly.

Upside is our daughters team is the under 16 girls regional Rugby Champions.

I wear this cross every single day.

Not because I’m overly religious, but because of who gave it to me and what I believe she wanted it to mean.

My Yaya knew the kid I had been. She also believed in the man I could become.

She’s been gone a long time, but this has never left my neck.

Some things are worth more than anything you could ever put a price on.
