In the fall, many fire safety experts remind families to change the batteries in their smoke and CO detectors. It's also wise to check whether the detectors have a "best before" date, in case they are past their ideal operational efficiency. Ionization and photoelectric smoke detectors have different ways of monitoring clean air versus smoky air, and both can become less effective over time. Be sure to look for a manufacture date or a replacement date. If you are not certain of the expiry date, install new units (ideally with dual sensors) that are clearly marked to remind you of the required replacement date.
