TD says Canada’s wealth gap is narrowing. (It's not)

Here are 5 reasons why this report is misleading 👇

1️⃣ Growth from a tiny base is misleading

TD highlights that the bottom 40% saw wealth grow 76% vs just 10% for the top 20%.

Median Net Worth:
Bottom 40%: $82,000
Top 20%: $3.5 million

Growth from a small base isn’t “closing the gap” when the top is sitting at $3.5M.

-----

2️⃣ The wealth gap is still massive

The top 20% hold 64% of total wealth
The bottom 40% hold just 3%

TD glosses over the distribution reality and ignores that the gap has already started widening again post-2023.

-----

3️⃣ Income inequality is getting worse

The income gap between the bottom 40% and top 20% is now at levels not seen since 2015.

You can't close a wealth gap when the income gap is widening

-----

4️⃣ Canada’s standard of living is slipping

GDP per capita is declining, and Canada is projected to rank last in OECD growth long-term.

If Canadians are getting poorer in real terms, who exactly is “catching up”?

-----

5️⃣ Debt is replacing real wealth

Lower-income households are increasing debt faster than assets due to rising costs of living.

Leveraging up isn’t wealth. It’s financial fragility.

-----

Bottom Line 🎯
The idea that Canada’s wealth divide is narrowing is comical. The gap is firmly intact.
