PLAYA CHIQUITA BEACH

Playa Chiquita Beach has crystal-clear waters, soft golden sand, and rows of palm trees. There’s also a short trail parallel to the shore where you can go for a short walk under the shade. Sometimes, you might even see horses grazing. Because of its low-key reputation, the atmosphere is always calm, peaceful, and laid back.

Playa Chiquita, located along the Caribbean Coast, is 67 km away from the major city of Limón, which is also where the closest airport is. From there, a drive to the playa will take about 1-1.5 hours.
The closest town is Puerto Viejo (6 km or 3.71mi west). If you’re coming from the capital of San José (223 km), Playa Chiquita will take you 4-5 hours, depending on the traffic and mode of transportation.

WEATHER

Because Playa Chiquita is located on the Caribbean Coast, it doesn’t follow the same dry and wet tropical patterns as the rest of Costa Rica. In fact, there are no strict dry or rainy seasons in Playa Chiquita—it’s really humid all year round. The sunniest months are September and October, while the rainiest are June and November.

ABOUT PROGRESO, MERIDA, YUCATAN, MEXICO

PLAYA PROGRESO is a BEACH TOWN on the northwestern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula. It’s a little over a half-hour drive from the inland city of Merida, making this a favoured destination for locals and international tourists. The town is located on a barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico, giving it a different feel than the beaches on the Caribbean side of the peninsula.

Progreso is a port city. It’s a common stop for cruise ships, which dock at its landmark long pier. An oceanfront promenade, the Malecón, is lined with beaches and thatch-roofed restaurants. The Faro de Puerto Progreso, built in 1893, is an active lighthouse. The city is a gateway to the inland Mayan archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Dzibilchaltún.

One of the simplest Progreso beach excursions is a stroll along the MALECON - a promenade lined with shops and restaurants adorned by murals, sculptures and modern art installations. You can go shopping, sample authentic local cuisine, or just people-watch along this attractive beach side feature.

World's longest pier (6.5 km):
Fans of engineering and architecture should take the opportunity to check out the world’s longest pier. So, just how long is the pier in Progreso, Mexico? The answer is 6.5 kilometres or about 4 miles!
You can’t just waltz out onto the pier, which is an active shipping artery. But you can access a fisherman’s bridge right next to it, allowing you to get close enough to appreciate its impressive size.

1-BED APARTMENT $460,000 USD, SEA VIEW
CASCAIS (Lisbon, Portugal)

Brand new 1-bedroom apartment, with a breathtaking sea view. The greatest feature of this property is its location - very close to the center of Cascais, near park, very close to the beach and the Cascais train station. You can walk to almost everywhere.

CASCAIS - PORTUGUESE RIVIERA

Only 30 minutes from the heart of Portugal’s capital city Lisbon, the elegant town of Cascais offers something truly unique. Here, we discover a perfect balance between sophisticated contemporary urban living and just about all one could dream of in terms of natural beauty.

Cascais is home to a flourishing expat community and attracts a dizzying array of international royalty, celebrities, and sports superstars thanks to its undeniable allure. It’s been the chosen summer destination of Portugal’s most prestigious elites since the 19th century, and today Cascais continues to evolve and blossom as a prosperous place to be for a diversity of locals and expats alike.

Good weather dominates at least two-thirds of the year, with summer highs reaching around 30ºC (86ºF) and happily no sign of the choking heatwaves that are often experienced a little further inland. Living in Cascais, you can anticipate pleasantly mild winters with periods of rain and seasonal nighttime lows rarely dipping below 5ºC (41ºF).

No wonder that Cascais is popular among international retirees.

Culture, relaxation, beauty, and climate will be on the must-have list for most, and for this reason, Cascais remains ever-popular with expat retirees. The right location means having everything on your doorstep, from beach bars to fine restaurants—and all the necessary amenities within walking distance. The streets of Cascais are flat, making it a great destination for those with mobility in mind. Do be aware, however, that the town’s polished cobbles call for practical footwear! In Cascais, golden years can be spent among a strong retiree expat community and within a location where English is usually spoken. Although, those who do their best with the language will get to enjoy far more of Portugal’s warm and welcoming culture!

Due to the prestigious status and popularity, Real estate in Cascais is more expensive compared to other parts of Portugal. Cascais is populated by a staggering array of multi-million Euro homes, although the more affordable options can be found there as well.

RETIRING IN PORTUGAL

Portugal is one of the best places for retirees. The country offers a mix of beautiful landscapes, friendly locals, and affordable living. In addition to that, its mild climate is perfect for enjoying outdoor activities year-round.

In 2024 Portugal was named the 2nd-best place in the world to retire by the Global Retirement Index for 2024. And Forbes calls it the most affordable place for retirees in Europe.

For North Americans Portugal is one of the easiest European countries to move to.

PROS AND BENEFITS:
- The visa process is straightforward.
- There is no need to take the driver’s test in the local language, as in other countries.
- Healthcare in Portugal is some of the best in the world at affordable prices
- Many of the locals, especially the younger generation speak English.
- Portuguese people are some of the nicest and most genuine in the world.
- Natural beauty of the country
- Mild year-round climate
- Easy access to the rest of Europe
- Portugal continually ranks as one of the safest countries in the world. The crime rate is low, gun violence is unheard of.
- Infrastructure in Portugal is equal to that found anywhere in the US or Canada.
- Fresh, drinkable water from the tap
- Reliable electricity
- High-speed, fiber optic internet.
- Portugal’s highway system is one of the finest in Europe, easy to navigate with ample rest stops along the way for snacks, restrooms, or for charging electric car motors.

MOST POPULAR PLACES TO LIVE

LISBON
Portugal’s buzzing capital city. It is an energetic mix of museums, concerts, restaurants, historic, tiled homes, and old-world charm. Home to Portugal’s main airport, Lisbon sees its share of tourists, so English is commonly spoken.

CASCAIS
Nearby, the town of Cascais has long been a popular expat haven where friends meet up at local cafes to sip wine, go for hikes along the coast, or join together for yoga.

PORTO
Located north from Lisbon, it is the second largest city in the country. Famed for its port wine-making region and terraced vineyards along the Douro River, its colorful riverfront area is a popular hangout for locals and expats alike. With another one of the country’s major airports, Porto sees its share of tourists, so English speakers are easy to find.

ALGARVE
In the south is the Algarve, boasting some of the best weather in all of Europe. Towns like Tavira and Lagos offer a mix of old-world charm with cobbled lanes and modern conveniences. There is never a shortage of English spoken almost anywhere in the Algarve because of the influx of summer tourists from the UK and the rest of the world.
Mild winter temperatures with little rain make the Algarve the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Winter is the ideal time to enjoy the quietness of the coast and admire the craggy, rock formations that accentuate the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

CENTRAL PORTUGAL
Central Portugal shouldn’t be overlooked. Despite its hot summers, it has charming villages and a traditional Portuguese vibe. This region is great for those of us who enjoy quieter surroundings away from the bustling cities.

COST OF LIVING

Most expats retire to Portugal nicely on about $3,000 a month, depending on lifestyle and whether they own or rent. Property near the coast comes with a higher price tag and brings summer tourists, just like anywhere else in the world. For a more authentic vibe, head inland, where rural villages lay in the shadow of castle ruins, surrounded by lush, emerald, green rolling hills.

HEALTH CARE

For most North Americans, the biggest savings comes with healthcare in Portugal, yet you don’t have to sacrifice quality. In fact, Portugal continually comes in at #12 according to the World Health Organization’s ranking. Residents in Portugal have access to both the public and the private healthcare system. The public system is free to join and covers all ages. Small fees do apply when seeing a doctor or being hospitalized up to a certain age, and then it’s free.

Most expats carry private health insurance, a requirement of the resident visa, and prefer to use the low-cost private healthcare system. Many hospitals and clinics in Portugal are proud to display the Joint Commission International gold seal of approval, a recognition that says they are one of the best in the world.

RETIRE IN PORTUGAL - RESIDENCY STATUS

When you search for the list of best places on Earth to retire, Portugal is usually on this list as one of the top countries. One of many reasons for popularity of this country for retirement is the surprising fact that the cost of living there is much less than not only in the USA and Canada, but in most of European countries as well. Combine this with excellent year round weather, especially in the Southern part of the country, beautiful coastal areas and beaches, as well as the European level of services and safety, and you get a unique option for your retirement.

RESIDENCY FOR RETIREES

In addition to that, it is much easier to obtain a residency status in Portugal than in most other European countries. Particularly, Portugal offers a D7 VISA, which is a great option for retirees or those living on passive income from outside of Portugal.

The terms of D7 VISA are simple and affordable:
You need to demonstrate a passive income (from pension or any other sources) in the amount of 100% of the minimum wage in Portugal. In 2024 this minimum wage was €820/month, which means that you will need to show $14,870 CAD of passive income per year. Plus, you will need to keep the same amount on the bank account in Portugal. This is a pretty low bar for retirees from Canada and the USA.

Temporary residence visas are initially granted for two years followed by a three year term. After 5 years of residency in Portugal, you can apply for a permanent residence visa or citizenship.

NO ENTRY VISAS

And even if you are not planning to obtain residency in Portugal, Canadians and US citizens can freely enter this country and stay there for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This basically means that you can spend 3 months in Portugal, then leave the Shengen zone, and return to Portugal after the period of 3 months.
