Gas prices in Canada could drop slightly starting next week, after the federal government just promised to pause the fuel excise tax until Labour Day. The tax relief would cut prices at the pump by 10 cents per litre of gas and 4 cents on diesel.

The move comes as global oil prices spike due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with gas prices across Canada still hovering over 40 cents higher than this time last year. Carney says his plan is expected to cost about $2.4 billion and will last a little over four months.

But Conservatives say it doesn't go far enough and are pushing for bigger, longer tax cuts that could save up to 25 cents per litre for the rest of the year, costing the feds around $9 billion.
