I've been waiting for Butter Chicken Roti to open and the time has come! East meets West (Indian!). 201 King Street East, just west of Fredrick. Over 30 kinds of roti and only a few minutes from home. This may become a problem :)

Looking for a change from No Frills or Metro? I checked this place out this morning and would describe it as part Longo's/ part Whole Foods. Good selection of organic foods, broad private label options plus hot and cold ready-made tables. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.

Just a 5 min drive from The Imperial Lofts @ Lakeshore Road East and Leslie (where the Canadian Tire is located).

Time to make it official, Toronto!

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Our Industrial Past - Weco Products Company Limited

After a hiatus of several months, Imperial Lofts Throwback Thursday returns with periodic articles highlighting the industrial and architectural history of the Imperial Lofts buildings and our neighbourhood.

Did you know that 90 Sherbourne Street was the Canadian headquarters of the company that pioneered nylon-bristle toothbrushes?

The modern toothbrush was first mass-produced in London, England, in the 1780s. Early designs featured animal hair embedded into a bone or wood handle. While dental hygiene greatly improved, the bristles would often remain soggy and riddled with bacteria.

In 1938, the company that invented Nylon - DuPont - marketed a new toothbrush with nylon bristles and a plastic handle under a partnership with an existing toothbrush manufacturer, The Western Company (Weco) of Chicago, which already produced a "Dr. West" toothbrush and other drugstore sundries. To reinforce the hygienic image of this new "Miracle Tuft" nylon toothbrush, the product came packaged in a sealed glass tube.

The new Dr. West Miracle Tuft toothbrush was marketed in Canada through Weco Products Co. Ltd.'s existing sales channels, at the time headquartered on the third floor of 266 King Street West. Eventually the operation moved to 90 Sherbourne Street. The toothbrush in this photo dates from 1957, when all of the Dr. West toothbrushes destined for sale in Canada came through 90 Sherbourne Street, and the price of each toothbrush was 69 cents.

As a pizza aficionado, I've been waiting for this place to open and it looks like it finally has! The renovated space occupies the southeast corner of Jarvis and Adelaide E, where 'G for Gelato' used to be. Check out this new restaurant in the neighbourhood.
