TRIP CANCELATION / INTERRUPTION REGARDING BOEING 737 MAX 8 ON YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE COVERAGE!
As you may be aware, Transport Canada has ordered all 737 MAX 8 aircraft operating in Canadian airspace to cease operations. This includes the domestic fleet (Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing) as well as all flights into and out of Canada (i.e. American Airlines) into Canada. The 737 MAX 8 model of Boeing aircraft has been operating in Canada on primarily vacation and leisure routes. This situation, especially in the midst of the busy March travel season, could significantly impact travellers’ plans.
For all who may be affected and wondering how this situation relates to their travel insurance, specifically the Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption / Trip Delay portion, following is some information you can share with them.
Travellers booked on a 737 MAX 8 aircraft will find this information indicated as 7M8 on their tickets and itineraries. Boeing 737-800 and 737-800 NG models of aircraft are not subject to the order to cease of operations.
Impacted travellers should contact their airline to check their flight status, make alternate
travel arrangements where necessary as well as to understand their cancellation and rebooking options.
Airlines will be covering the change fees for impacted flights.
If your would like to make a claim related to this incident, you may submit the applicable documentation for a review of their specific situation subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.
As the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 were grounded on March 13, travel insurance policies purchased on or after that date will not cover delays or other losses caused by the grounding because it is now a known event.
We will continue to review developments surrounding this situation and provide you with any further updates that might impact you travel insurance coverage.
Thank you.
