🏡 Why I'm Changing the Way I Host Open Houses
For years, signing in at an open house has been standard practice. Unfortunately, it's also become common for visitors to provide inaccurate information, incomplete contact details, or no meaningful identification at all.
The reality is that open houses are not public spaces. They are private homes and properties that sellers have entrusted us to protect.
As REALTORS®, we have a responsibility to know who is entering those homes. That responsibility extends to protecting our clients, their property, visitors, and ourselves.
Recent incidents involving REALTORS® in our region, including a reported sexual assault of a female agent, have reinforced the importance of accountability and safety during open houses.
As a result, I will be implementing the following measures at the open houses I personally host:
✅ Valid government-issued photo ID required for entry
✅ Mandatory sign-in for all attendees
✅ Two REALTORS® hosting whenever possible
✅ Open houses may be postponed if a second agent is unavailable
✅ Exploring pre-registration options for future events
These are not industry-wide requirements. They are professional standards I have chosen to adopt to better protect my clients, colleagues, and myself.
Visitors who choose not to provide identification or sign in will be respectfully denied entry and may schedule a private viewing through their own REALTOR®.
I've shared my thoughts and reasoning in a new blog post.
