I moved to Powell River from the Yukon in 2020, and one of the things that still stands out to me is just how different August feels here.

In the Yukon, August always felt like summer was starting to wind down. The leaves begin to turn, there’s a crispness in the morning air, school is starting back up, and you know jackets — and eventually snowsuits — aren’t far behind.

When I moved to Powell River, I had to completely change the way I thought about August.

Here, we don’t have to squeeze every last drop out of summer before it disappears. August isn’t the beginning of fall — it’s some of the best summer we get.

The sun is still hot. The ocean and lakes have finally warmed up. The beaches are beautiful. The crickets are going all day. And there are still plenty of evenings where you can sit and enjoy the warmth.

Maybe that’s one of my favourite things about living here.

We still have summer left. ☀️

And I plan on enjoying it.
