🌲 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: CHARLESWOOD🌲
There’s something about Charleswood that has always made it feel a little different from the rest of Winnipeg.
It’s the kind of place where you can be driving through the neighbourhood one minute & suddenly feel like you’ve left the city behind. Trees, the river, wildlife, quiet streets… and then, just like that, you’re back in the middle of everything.
I’m in Charleswood often, and one of the things I love is how easily it connects to the rest of the city. Take Shaftesbury Boulevard from Wilkes Avenue and follow it north — you’ll come out onto Grant Avenue, veer right at Moray & boom, you’re at West Portage Avenue.
Or stay on Shaftesbury heading the other way and you’ll find yourself at Assiniboine Park.
That’s Charleswood to me. It feels tucked away, but you’re never really far from anywhere.
And then there are those familiar places that have been part of the neighbourhood for years.
Sorrento’s, on Grant Avenue in the Charleswood Centre, has been serving the southwest Winnipeg community for more than 30 years. The shopping centre has had a few facelifts over the years, and a few new shops added, but still one of those familiar places you know you'll find when you need something.
Another staple is the Charleswood Legion Branch #100 on Roblin Boulevard. It has been part of the community since 1932, and it’s still going strong with dances, meat draws, bingo, cribbage, darts, shuffleboard & plenty of other events that keep people coming through the doors. There’s even a Sherman tank out front — a local landmark you really can’t miss!
And if you’ve lived in Charleswood for a while, you might remember The Charlie at the old Charleswood Hotel. It was the local watering hole — a place where people from Charleswood & beyond would meet up. The hotel is gone now, but The Charlie is one of those little pieces of Charleswood history that people still remember.
Charleswood has changed a lot since it became part of Winnipeg in 1972. New homes, businesses & roads have continued to develop, and the city has certainly grown around it.
But somehow, it still feels like the Charleswood it has always been.
You can head into Assiniboine Forest, walk the Harte Trail, spot a deer, follow the river or just take the long way home through the trees. 🌲🦌 And yet, everything you need is right there.
That’s what I love about Charleswood — it has grown with the city without losing that Country - City feeling that makes it so special.
A little bit city. A little bit country. And very much Charleswood. ❤️
