Elmwood Park has a fascinating history that goes back more than a century. 🌳🏡

Located at 380 Henderson Highway, the park was purchased by the City of Winnipeg in 1909, shortly after Elmwood became part of Winnipeg. For generations it was a beautifully maintained neighbourhood gathering place, with a full-time gardener, thousands of flowers, a lily pond, wading pool and recreation programs. 🌷💦

Today, Elmwood Park remains an important community green space. It provides a playground, open space for recreation, a seasonal wading pool and a place for neighbours, families and dogs to enjoy the outdoors. 🛝⚽🐕

🌳🪦 A little piece of Winnipeg history hiding in plain sight…

Have you ever wondered how the Elmwood neighbourhood got its name?

It actually started with a cemetery.

🌿 In 1901, plans began for what would become Elmwood Cemetery, on 38 acres of land in what was then the Municipality of Kildonan, between Henderson Highway and the Red River.

The land was once known as McIntosh Garden, and the cemetery was designed by Minneapolis landscape engineer Frank H. Nutter with winding pathways, park-like spaces and an emphasis on preserving the beautiful mature elm, maple and ash trees already growing there. 🌳

The cemetery officially opened in 1902, with the first recorded burial being nine-month-old Grace Eveline Lemon on March 8, 1902. 👶

Interestingly, the cemetery was controversial at the time. Local residents and landowners objected to having a cemetery established in Kildonan, but the provincial government approved the project.

And then something rather remarkable happened…

When the area joined the City of Winnipeg in 1906, the surrounding district had become known as Elmwood — taking its name from the cemetery. 🏡🌳

Today, Elmwood Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 50,000 people, including many prominent Manitobans such as former premiers Rodmond Roblin and Dufferin Roblin, journalist E. Cora Hind, newspaper editor John W. Dafoe and former Winnipeg mayor Bill Norrie.

It is more than a cemetery. It is a living piece of Winnipeg's history — a beautiful, peaceful landscape connecting generations of Winnipeggers to the community around it. ❤️

Next time you're travelling along Henderson Highway or walking through Elmwood, remember… the neighbourhood got its name from the trees, and the trees gave the cemetery its name. 🌳
