The #1 mistake people make when TDY to Germany.
It happens every single TDY cycle without fail. Here's how it plays out:
1. Service member gets orders to Germany. Starts searching Facebook groups, random websites, and asking around for housing leads.
2. They find a place that looks decent, but there is no fixed price - the landlord seems friendly enough though. They shake hands on it... or worse, sign something... before they've even landed.
3. They show up and realize the daily rate the landlord quoted is over the authorized TLA allowance. Priced above what temporary living allowance will cover. The difference comes straight out of their pocket, and nobody mentioned that before they signed. Sometimes they got stuck with the booking.
4. Or they booked too far from their gaining installation. A long commute to work and also a long commute to take care of in processing matters on base.
5. Or the place looked great in photos but wasn't actually as good furnished and not to the standard required for needs in a TLA. Now they're sleeping on an air mattress in a "fully furnished" apartment.
6. Or they waited too long, assumed something would open up, and arrived in Germany with nowhere confirmed to stay. Scrambling at the worst possible moment.
The mistake isn't carelessness. It's not knowing the rules before you book.
TLA in Germany has specific requirements that most regular rental listings won't mention and most landlords don't understand. Daily rates within the allowance, correct furnishing standards, proper documentation for finance. It all has to line up or you're paying out of your own pocket.
