On 12 August, Mallorca will fall briefly into darkness as the moon passes between us and the sun, with around 96 seconds of totality just before sunset.
If you’re planning to watch from the Serra de Tramuntana, there is a little more to consider than simply finding the perfect viewpoint.
From 3pm to 9pm, access to parts of the Serra will be heavily restricted. You can drive in if you are a resident, have a second home, are staying at registered accommodation, work in the area, or have a qualifying restaurant reservation. You’ll need documentary proof. A restaurant booking alone may not be enough. The establishment must also have sufficient parking.
If you’re simply heading into the mountains to find a viewpoint, expect not to be allowed through.
The restrictions don’t apply in the same way to those arriving on foot, by bicycle or by motorbike, while authorised public transport, taxis and shuttles will continue to operate under certain conditions.
A few things worth knowing before the day arrives:
• Allow plenty of time and avoid unnecessary driving.
• Don’t park on road verges or obstruct access.
• Carry proof of any exemption you’re relying on.
• Most importantly, use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses whenever any part of the sun is visible. Regular sunglasses won’t do.
The eclipse may last only a few minutes. The roads, however, will be busy for considerably longer.
If you have a clear western horizon from home or your hotel, there may be something rather lovely about watching it from there, with a glass of something cold and nowhere to drive afterwards.
12 August. Plan ahead. Look west. And enjoy the darkness.
