• In one of their examples, a household leaving a house of around 1,600 square feet, built before 1919, for a new build of around 800 square feet would see its annual bill fall from around £5,410 to £1,660.

There’s something we dont say often enough about this job and that is that most of the houses we build, we’ll never live in.

Yet we spend years imagining as if we would, the run of skirting, the angle of roofline, the exact fall of light through a kitchen window, knowing that it will eventually be someone else creating their Sunday morning rituals.

Tomorrow we are opening the doors on Old Forge Mews, our newest collection of single-storey homes in the heart of Smarden, Kent.
