🌿 Do you remember George Hay?

George Hay was the gardener at Wolborough House for many years and clearly left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Today, his memory lives on in the gardens with this bench, dedicated to him, and even his well-worn gardening flip-flops.

We’re hoping to learn more about George and the part he played in the history of Wolborough House.

Did you know George? Do you have any stories, photographs, or memories of him or know someone that does? Every memory helps preserve not only the history of the house, but also the people who made it so special. 💚

📽️ The Hellyer Family of Wolborough House

As part of our ongoing research into the history of Wolborough House, we’d like to share two fascinating videos created by Ben Field about Sydney Hellyer, one of the sons of Charles Hellyer, who built Wolborough House in 1910.

For anyone interested in the Hellyer family and their connection to Brixham’s fishing industry, these are well worth watching.

📜 Did you know?

Wolborough House was built in 1910 for Charles Hellyer, a wealthy trawler fleet owner, at a cost of more than £48,000—a remarkable sum at the time.

One of its most distinctive features is the decorative marble frieze work on the exterior, which was completed by Italian craftsmen brought over specifically to work on the house.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more of the fascinating history of Wolborough House and the people connected to it.

Do you have any photographs, memories, or stories about the house? We’d love to hear from you.
