to a project completed in Bournemouth back in 2012.

This extension created a generous kitchen and family room, designed around modern living and a strong connection to the garden. Large bifold doors open directly onto the existing swimming pool terrace, creating a bright, sociable space that works just as well today as it did when it was first completed.

The photos shown here were taken recently in 2026, and it's great to see the project looking as relevant and well-loved as ever. Even more pleasing, the property has recently been sold, demonstrating how thoughtful design and quality construction continue to add value over time.

Projects like this remind us that good architecture isn't just about the day it's finished, it's about creating spaces that stand the test of time.

Delighted to have secured planning approval for a carefully designed security shutter to protect a local shop that has recently suffered a number of break-ins.

External shutters can be challenging from a planning perspective, with a general presumption against them due to their potential impact on the character and appearance of a building and the wider street scene. However, by working closely with the client and local authority, we were able to develop a solution that balanced the need for improved security with good design principles.

A positive outcome that helps safeguard the business while respecting the surrounding environment.

Delighted to see planning approval granted for a canopy extension to a distribution warehouse that I originally worked on 25 years ago.

It’s always rewarding when clients return years later for the next stage of a site’s development. In this case, the relationship has spanned a quarter of a century, which is a testament to the value of long-term partnerships and continuity of knowledge.

Looking forward to seeing the project progress and supporting the client on the next chapter of the site’s evolution.

Happy Monday!

A new week brings new opportunities to create spaces that inspire, function beautifully, and add lasting value. Whether you're planning a home extension, renovation, new build, or exploring ideas for a future project, good design starts with understanding your vision.

As an independent architect, I work closely with clients to deliver thoughtful, practical, and creative solutions tailored to their needs and budget.

If you're considering a project this year, I'd be happy to discuss how we can bring your ideas to life.

Wishing everyone a productive and successful week ahead!

This week’s record-breaking UK temperatures aren’t just another weather headline — they’re a reminder that the way we design buildings matters more than ever.

As architects, we’re no longer designing purely for aesthetics or compliance. We’re designing for resilience, comfort, and long-term adaptability in a changing climate.

From passive cooling strategies and solar shading to material selection and natural ventilation, the decisions made at design stage can have a lasting impact on how buildings perform during extreme weather.

The recent heatwave has highlighted how much of the UK’s building stock still struggles with overheating. Climate-responsive architecture is no longer a future conversation — it’s a present responsibility.

Good architecture should work with the environment, not against it.

Happy Friday — stay cool and enjoy the sunshine. ☀️

This eco-bookshelf converts into a coffin.

Designed by William Warren and called Shelves for Life, it is made to stay with its owner for a lifetime. The shelves hold your books and objects while you live — then, when the time comes, they can be taken apart and reassembled into a coffin.

A week on from installing solar panels at my own home, and with the recent sunny weather, the benefits are already very apparent, generating clean energy and noticeably reducing reliance on the grid.

As an architect, I regularly encourage clients to consider renewable technologies as part of a wider sustainable design approach, so it felt important to experience the process firsthand too. From orientation and roof design to energy efficiency and long-term running costs, solar can make a meaningful contribution when integrated thoughtfully into a project.

There’s something satisfying about designing for sustainability professionally and then applying the same principles personally. Leading by example matters.
