Cracks above windows and doors shouldn’t always be dismissed as cosmetic.

When a steel lintel begins to corrode, the rust expands and puts pressure on the masonry above. This can lift the brickwork, open the mortar joints and leave individual bricks loose and potentially dangerous.

The risk can become even greater during window replacement, when the existing frame is removed and disturbed brickwork is left unsupported.

Warning signs include horizontal cracking, lifted or uneven brickwork, rust staining and loose mortar around the opening. If you notice any of these, it’s worth having the lintel and surrounding masonry properly assessed.

This one has now been made structurally secure and rebuilt correctly.
