🔥 Not every fireplace needs a fire… apparently!

Today’s installation was this Axon Nelson Limestone Fireplace, fitted as a purely decorative feature in a customer’s newly renovated dining room.

I did, of course, try my best to convince them that a solid fuel stove would look lovely sitting in there… but you can’t win them all. 🔥

No stove, no fire and no chimney involved with this one, just a really smart limestone fireplace to finish off the room and give it a proper focal point.

And to be fair… it looks cracking! 👌

Really lovely customers to work for as well, which always makes the job that little bit better. Most importantly, they’re extremely happy with the finished result.

A proper day on the tools! 🔥🔧

Not one, but TWO multi-fuel stove installations completed in the same house today.

The Woodford Chadwick 12 went into the huge entrance hall fireplace, followed by the Atlantic Pearl 5 in the lounge.

Both fitted into the property’s existing original brick fireplaces, keeping all that character while bringing them back into use.

Safe to say we earned our dinner tonight. 😂

Two stove installs. One house. One very long day. 😂🔥

It’s been a busy one today at Wickenden Chimney Sweeps, with two new multi-fuel stoves installed and commissioned in the same property.

In the entrance hall we fitted a Woodford Chadwick 12 Multi-Fuel Stove into that huge original brick fireplace, a big stove for a big space, and it looks right at home in there.

Then onto the lounge, where we installed an Atlantic Pearl 5 Multi-Fuel Stove into another lovely original brick fireplace.

I’m a big fan of working with what a property already has rather than covering everything up. The brickwork and character were already there, the new stoves just bring the fireplaces back into proper use.

Two completely different stoves, two fireplaces back up and running and, most importantly, one very happy customer.

And one very tired Jack heading home. 😂🔥

This is what you want to see after a chimney sweep. 👀

A before and after look inside an open-fire chimney we recently rotary power swept.
The first photo shows the soot and deposits that had built up across the inside of the flue. Once properly swept, the second photo gives a much clearer view of the brickwork and flue way underneath.

This is exactly why we use rotary power sweeping on every chimney we sweep. The rotating head works its way around the flue, removing the build-up and giving the chimney a thorough clean.

With an open fire, everything disappears up the chimney where you can’t normally see it. These camera shots give you a pretty good idea of the difference a proper sweep can make.

Two rooms. One stove. 🔥

The customer wanted a wood burner in both the lounge and the dining room. Rather than installing two separate stoves, we opened the fireplace right through and installed this Chesneys Salisbury Double-Sided 8.1kW.

One fire can now be enjoyed from either side of the chimney breast, with the stove sitting right at the heart of both rooms.

And it’s a seriously solid stove. The Salisbury is a substantial bit of kit, and with 8.1kW of output, there’s plenty of heat coming from it too.

We finished the opening with a simple black chamber, matching trim and a honed granite hearth, keeping everything around the stove clean and understated.

The first photo shows what was there before, quite a change from an open fireplace serving one room to a double-sided stove serving both.

A cracking project to work on and something a little different from our usual installations. 🔥

Some stove installs definitely fight you more than others… this was one of them. 😂

Recently installed this Portway Arundel 4.9kW, but before the new stove and liner could go anywhere, the old liner had to come out.

It had been up the chimney for over 25 years and was in a right state. Some sections were rotten and literally breaking to pieces as we removed them, while other sections had fused solid and really didn’t want to move.

For a while it was looking like we might have to physically break into the flue to get the remaining liner out, something I really wanted to avoid.

Thankfully, after a fair bit of persistence (and probably a few choice words 😂), we managed to get the whole lot out without opening up the flue.

New liner in, Portway Arundel 4.9kW installed and commissioned, and the customer is very happy with the finished result.

Not the easiest route to the photo you see here… but we got there! 🔥

Well… this wasn’t what I was expecting to find today. 😳

I went out to carry out a routine sweep on a wood-burning stove and noticed from ground level that there was no bird guard/cowl fitted to the chimney.

I recommended fitting one, the customer agreed, and I headed up to the chimney expecting to find the liner properly terminated into the pot.

Instead, I found this.

The flexible liner had simply been left unfinished inside the chimney pot, crushed, torn and looking like someone had attacked it with a pair of tin snips and called it a day.

No proper finish. No suitable termination. Just the liner left exactly as you can see in the photo.

This is the part of a stove installation that the customer will probably never see, and unfortunately that's where some cowboy workmanship can hide.

A flexible flue liner isn't just a bit of pipe shoved up the chimney. It's part of a complete flue system carrying hot combustion gases, smoke and potentially carbon monoxide safely out of the property. It needs to be correctly supported, connected and terminated using the appropriate components and in accordance with the liner manufacturer's requirements.

Whoever installed this stove may have left everything looking lovely downstairs, but this is what they left behind on the roof.
There's rough workmanship… and then there's this.

Fortunately, what started as a straightforward recommendation for a bird guard meant this was spotted and the customer can now have it properly rectified.

You really do have to wonder how someone could stand back, look at that and think: “Yep, job done.” 🤦‍♂️

Been looking forward to getting this one fired up. 🔥

Finished the installation of this Woodwarm Fireview Eco 5kW Vintage today, and I have to say, I’m seriously impressed with this stove.

It’s a proper solid bit of kit. The build quality is excellent, everything feels well made and substantial, and once we got it commissioned it was throwing out some serious heat. Definitely one I’d happily recommend.

We kept the fireplace itself simple with a black granite hearth, then had the finishing trim made bespoke by a local blacksmith to suit the opening. I think the clean black finish works really well and lets the stove do the talking.

The second photo shows what we started with, quite a difference by the time we were finished!

Always nice installing something a little different, and I’d certainly like to fit a few more of these.

A bit of a change from the wood burners for this one.

This chimney breast had already been opened up, but the customer wanted to turn it into a proper feature rather than leave it as an empty opening.

We installed a Brompton Aegean Limestone fireplace with a Jubilee cast iron insert, finished with a Percy Doughty electric fire.

I think traditional fireplaces like this still have their place. You get all the detail and character of a cast iron fireplace without needing to have a working open fire.

The limestone surround and black cast insert work particularly well against the dark blue wall, and it’s made much better use of what was otherwise a fairly plain chimney breast.

Nice straightforward job, and a big difference to the room.
