Car park resurfacing complete at Ely College

The summer holidays give schools and colleges one short, fixed window to get major works done — and no room to overrun. We used ours at Ely College to deliver a full car park upgrade, handed back before staff and students returned.

Scope included:

• Full resurfacing across the main car park and access roads
• New white lining throughout — parking bays, accessible bays, hatched areas and pedestrian crossing
• New lighting columns
• Illuminated bollards defining vehicle routes and pedestrian zones
• New kerbing, fencing and landscaping to the central island

Six weeks, start to finish, complete for day one of term.

New client, first job done. 🔴

This week the Ashco team completed our first works for Eastern Education Group at Abbeygate Sixth Form College in Bury St Edmunds.

Education sites bring their own demands — working around students and staff, tight access windows, and a finish that has to stand up to heavy daily use. Our directly employed trades team delivered on programme and left the site clean and safe.

A great first job, and we’re looking forward to supporting the Group across their estate.

Completed: internal alterations and accessibility upgrade at St Mary’s Church, Ely. ⛪

A community building used week in, week out — so the brief was to modernise the facilities without losing the character of the space, and to make the whole building genuinely accessible to everyone who uses it.

Our scope at St Mary’s included:

• Full strip-out and reconfiguration of the existing WC facilities
• New WC cubicles with full-height IPS panelling and stainless steel dispensers
• New Doc M compliant accessible WC with full grab rail set, alarm system and level access
• Slip-resistant safety vinyl flooring throughout
• Formation of a new office within the building
• New fire-rated doorsets with power-assisted opening to the main hall, entrance and accessible WC
• External level access approach — new paving, threshold drainage channel and handrails
• Associated M&E, decorations and fire alarm alterations

The power-assisted doors are the detail we’re most pleased with. Getting through a doorway shouldn’t be the hardest part of anyone’s visit, and St Mary’s now works for wheelchair users, parents with buggies and older members of the congregation alike.

A very different kind of roof for us this month. 🐴

We’re currently on site at Newmarket, delivering a full re-thatch and repairs across the stable yard — one of the more traditional projects to come through the door, and one we’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

The scope has involved:

• Full independent scaffold to the perimeter, with boarded lifts and protective netting throughout
• Complete strip and re-thatch of the yard roofs
• New block-cut ridge detail

Working around horses, staff and daily routines means the programme has to be managed carefully — no noise where it isn’t needed, clean access maintained at all times, and the yard handed back tidy every single evening.

Specialist thatching delivered by our friends at Cobb Thatching Ltd, whose craftsmanship speaks for itself. The finish on that ridge is superb.

Traditional trades, modern site management. That’s the balance.

Ashco appointed PPM contractor for Grand Arcade, Cambridge

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ashco Building & Maintenance Services Ltd as the PPM contractor for Grand Arcade, Cambridge, for an initial three-year term.

The appointment encompasses the delivery of a comprehensive planned preventative maintenance regime across the centre, together with reactive works and ongoing support to the on-site management team.

Operating within a prominent, live retail environment brings its own demands. With the centre trading seven days a week and welcoming millions of visitors each year, maintenance requires careful planning, close coordination and a consistent focus on quality, safety and minimal disruption.

Our team will work closely with centre management and retailers to ensure the highest standards of building maintenance are maintained throughout the contract.

We would like to thank the Grand Arcade team for their confidence in Ashco. We look forward to building a strong working relationship and delivering a high standard of service over the next three years.

🔧 New Project | Cambridge University Hospitals
Ashco Building and Maintenance Services Limited and B & B CARPENTRY LIMITED are proud to announce that we are due to start on site at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, delivering the full refurbishment of five shower rooms within the R2 Rehabilitation Ward.
Working together, the scheme involves stripping each room back to a bare shell and rebuilding to a modern, fully accessible standard — including Trovex Hygipod pre-plumbed IPS and Shower Pod units with DOC M packages, Altro Aquarius welded vinyl flooring, hygienic wall cladding, and DOC M-compliant sanitaryware and equipment throughout.
Delivering this kind of work within a live hospital ward takes careful planning, strict infection-control discipline, and close coordination around patient care. We're proud to be taking it on to a two-week turnaround per bathroom as the programme gets under way.

One of our directors, Iain, is currently running his way round the Isle of White, participating in the Isle of White Ultra Challenge. This is a 106km loop round the Isle of White coastal path which he is hoping to complete within 24hours!
