Thinking of getting a pet in your rented flat? Thanks to the Renters’ Rights Act, landlords can’t just say “no” because Fluffy might scratch the sofa. But before you rush to adopt every adorable animal in sight, there’s a little homework to do.

Some pets are basically built for apartment life: low-energy dogs like Cavaliers, Bichons, and Shih Tzus, or chill cats like British Shorthairs, Ragdolls, and Birmans. They’ll lounge on your sofa, not redecorate your walls with claws.

Other pets? Maybe think twice. Border Collies, Huskies, or German Shepherds are basically tiny (or not-so-tiny) tornadoes of energy - they need space, exercise, and a patient human. Otherwise… chaos.
