What a view! The view out the window is pretty nice too.

The great thing about this job, or one of them, is the variety. None two jobs are the same, even if they look similar. Different locations, different materials and totally different clients. Even our team are forever evolving and learning. So as they say, the same man never walks in the same river twice. Because it's never the same man and never the same river.

This was a lovely project out in a lovely part of the country, Ramsden Heath near Billericay. A beautiful quartz, Qrtz Inca Ice, and a lovely cup of tea.

All these good feelings are not accidental. They are all totally intentional and the kind of feelings that a new kitchen and worktop should definitely provoke. It's a really exciting time and just as plastering and fitting carpets have the effect of moving a project forward disproportionately, so does a kitchen worktop. It turns a kitchen in progress, to the hub of the home. Sunday roasts and entertaining friends, bring it on!

Let's talk sense and save money - it's Friday!

Times are tough right now and everyone is looking to save money on their project. It doesn't matter if it is your own kitchen or a project of 300 plots. The issues are the same. Your costs are only going in one direction but your budget isn't.

There are lots of simple things that can be done to save money while not impacting the quality of your project. All it takes is a sensible conversation and a willing to be flexible. Joint positioning, upstand height, splashback layout, access, scheduling, material thickness, detailing and payment planning are all potential areas of savings to be had.

Aurora Fantasy in Essex

This was a really nice project, not the title of a dubious film from the 70's, using the beautiful dolomitic marble, Aurora Fantasy for a kitchen worktop in Shoeburyness.

The stunning material was selected by the client after a visit to view the slabs. They instantly fell in love with them and it is easy to see why. There was a challenge to be thrown our way though that is not unusual with this type of stone, due to its variable mineral composition.

Now with most material that is 30mm thick we would reduce the thickness of the upstands to 20mm for the upstands. However, for this one that simply wasn't possible. The stone became too fragile. But the client didn't want the upstands so thick. So we needed a solution.

At O Stone UK we do love a challenge and will do all we can to find a suitable solution. In this case, whereas we couldn't reduce the thickness, we did manage to reduce the impression of thickness. A bit like when I put on my glasses! We machined the leading edge back at 45 degrees to reduce the visible edge thereby creating a lovely detail while creating an illusion to achieve the objective.

Perfect! I know this as the client was smiling. The only sign to pay attention to.

What is going on with the UK?

We seem to have lost our way a little and are currently on a race to the bottom. Our standards are slipping and the price is dictating our choices. We're all a bit pessimistic (realistic to those that are pessimistic) and have lost that proud umph that us Brits are known for.

Life is what you make it. Things don't always go the way you want them to go, but if you look closer we are absolutely surrounded by amazing things. And I'm not just talking our worktops! How lucky are we to be born in this beautiful safe country with everything we need on tap.

Be grateful for everything in your life as it is. Aim for better, but live for today. My brother was killed when I was just 18, around 100 years ago. He was awesome. And every time I'm having a tough day with a big problem, I remind myself of this. How much would my brother love having this problem? It puts in back in perspective and I get on with it.

If we are to make this country great again, we need to get off of this downward spiral. We we all pay as little as possible for everything, in a simplistic formula those businesses have less money to pay people, and those people then have less to spend so need cheaper alternatives. As we go the standard gets lower and lower.

Put a stop to it now. Look at the quality of something well made and the feeling it gives you. It should make you smile and feel amazing, inspired to do great things. It should add to your upward journey to a better life.

STONE SECRETS #29 - Why Stone Joints Need To Be Planned, Not Hidden.

Nobody really wants to see a joint in a beautiful piece of stone.

But sometimes they're unavoidable.

Slab sizes are limited. Access can be difficult. Long pieces can become fragile.



And the shape of a kitchen, bathroom or feature may simply make a joint necessary.

The secret isn't pretending joints don't exist.

It's planning them properly.

The position matters.

A joint shouldn't simply go wherever it's easiest to cut the stone.

Before fabrication, we consider where it will be least noticeable, how the stone will be supported and, importantly, what the veining will do when the two pieces meet.

Sometimes moving a joint just a few hundred millimetres can completely change the finished result.

Fewer joints isn't always better.

We've talked before about how beautiful large pieces of stone can look.

But trying to make something in one enormous piece isn't always the best answer.

It might make transportation difficult, increase the risk of breakage or create a weaker section around a sink or hob.

Sometimes adding a carefully positioned joint actually produces the better installation.

With strongly veined marble or quartz, the pieces either side of a joint should be considered together.

Can we continue the movement?

Can we position the cuts so your eye naturally travels across the joint rather than stopping at it?

When it's done well, the joint doesn't need to disappear completely.

It simply stops being the thing you notice.

THE SECRET

Monday - A Day Full of New Opportunity

This is the day that I find the most energetic. There's a certain energy to the start of a fresh week. It feels like the place to start on a new project, campaign, hobby or search of some description.

You've had a great weekend with the family, so you are totally recharged and good to go. The possibilities seem endless. Anything is possible.

Finding the perfect worktop to compliment your dream kitchen now seems much easier. Primarily as this post has popped up on your feed, but also because it's the start of the week and the sun is shining.

Although to me every days feels like a Monday. Not just because I am an incredibly positive individual, but because as I get older time seems to go faster. One minute it's Monday and the next, it's Monday again!

"The Lowest Quotation Rarely Delivers The Lowest Costs"

Something my dad always told me and like so many of the old sayings, it is so true.

There are many ways we can reduce the price of your worktop.

🟡 Use cheaper materials (often with unknown characteristics)

🟡 Use cheaper labour (less skilled and experienced)

🟡 Less health and safety in the factory (putting profit ahead of health)

🟡 Optimise the schedule (fit you in when we it suits us)

🟡 Provide less service (before, during and after)

Many companies will tell you they don't do any of the above and still come out with the lowest price. Another of my dads sayings springs to mind;

"If it seems too good to be true, it probably is"

The old folk, just as our parents were when we were kids, are much wiser than we care to credit them. When we were kids we didn't listen of course. Now? We're much wiser!

Constant Improvement - Complacency is the root of all evil !

It can be easy to forget how important a kitchen worktop is to a client. When you do a lot every week, it is so easy to become complacent. Each one is a small part of our month. But to an individual, they may have been planning this for a couple of years. And it is so important to recognise this and give it the attention it requires.

To help move the business forward as well as battling complacency, we are always looking for better ways of doing everything. Anything that makes the whole process an easier and more pleasant experience for our customers. From finding the perfect material for their situation all the way through to the after care.

Ways to Avoid Losing Money on Your Worktop!

A kitchen worktop is a big investment, whether you are upgrading your own home, or trying to set your development apart from the many others. It is a good investment, and can achieve everything you want it to, but it need to be done correctly.

As my dad always told me, "the cheapest quote rarely comes with the lowest cost".

And this is never truer than with worktops. There will always be someone that is prepared to do something for nothing. But in the ever increasingly professional industry of ours, this often involves people cutting corner to achieve that price.

Using inexperienced masons and fitters. Using cheap imported products that don't come up to standards. Or not offering a warranty that is sufficiently long. Most reputable quartz suppliers will offer a 25 year warranty, but this only covered the material. It doesn't cover the manufacturing costs or the removal of the old and fitting the new. This is down to the fabricator you use.

So choose your stone partner carefully and save yourself money. Talk to us. ✨💛
