When people hear “homelessness”, they often picture someone sleeping on the street. But someone may be staying on a friend’s sofa or moving between temporary places with no settled home of their own.

These situations can be less visible, but the need for somewhere safe and stable is real.

At First People Housing, we support men at risk of street homelessness across Hertfordshire.

Follow us for a closer look at supported housing and the people behind it.

Progress isn’t the same for every man we support.

It might be settling into a new home, getting to an appointment, building a practical skill or feeling ready to make a plan for the future.

Our support and development workers take time to listen and work alongside each person towards the goals that matter to him.

Meet the Team: Mark Brown 👋

Mark is one of our Support & Development Workers at First People Housing, bringing years of frontline experience supporting people through some incredibly challenging circumstances.

His approach is practical, calm and straight-talking, with a real focus on helping people build trust, regain confidence and take positive steps towards greater independence.

Outside work, Mark’s interests are pretty varied too — from scriptwriting and video editing to his allotment, OSINT and cyber security. Safe to say, he likes keeping busy.

We’re really pleased to have Mark as part of the First People team 🥰

Independence is built in everyday moments.

Cooking a meal. Keeping on top of the washing. Making an appointment. Building a routine.

They might seem like small things, but they can be important steps towards feeling more confident, capable and in control.

At First People Housing, our Support and Development Workers work alongside each man, offering practical support, encouragement and guidance as he builds the skills needed for greater independence.

It’s not about doing everything for someone.

It’s about helping them feel ready to do more for themselves.

Small steps. Real progress. A stronger foundation for what comes next.

A safe place to live can be the first step towards something bigger.

At First People Housing, we support men to build stability, confidence and independence — with practical support, encouragement and a plan for what comes next.

Because the right support at the right time can make all the difference.

A safe place to live can be the start of so much more.

With the right support, stability can grow into confidence, routine, connection and greater independence.

At First People Housing, the aim is not simply to provide somewhere to stay, but to help people build towards what comes next in a way that works for them.

Progress can look different for everyone, but having the right environment, support and opportunities around you can make a real difference.

Because a home should be the beginning of what comes next.

Housing support isn’t one-size-fits-all.

For our residents, it can mean help with managing appointments and paperwork, developing everyday living skills, accessing local services or dealing with an issue before it becomes a crisis.

Sometimes it’s practical help. Sometimes it’s sitting down, having a conversation and working out the next step together.

Our team provides consistent, individual support designed to help each resident become more confident and independent.

That’s what housing support looks like at First People.

Westminster talked about su***de prevention. But where are the new commitments?

The latest debate raised some of the most important questions facing the government right now — from male su***de rates and access to support, to the funding needed to make new mental health services actually work.

The discussion matters. But discussion alone isn’t enough.

If the government wants to change the narrative around su***de, it also needs properly funded services, measurable commitments and a willingness to change course when current policy isn’t delivering.

Our latest blog looks at what was said, what wasn’t, and why the next steps matter.

Support doesn’t always have to be a huge intervention.

Sometimes the things that make the biggest difference are the everyday moments — a phone call, help getting to an appointment, a bit of encouragement, or simply knowing there’s someone there when things feel difficult.

At First People Housing, support is about meeting people where they are and helping them take the next step at their own pace.

Because progress can start with something small.

A tenancy can be the start of something much bigger.

For the men we support, moving into safe accommodation is an important first step — but the support doesn’t stop when the keys are handed over.

It can mean help with managing a tenancy, attending appointments, rebuilding routines, developing confidence and working towards greater independence.

Because having somewhere safe to live matters.

But so does having the right support to help build what comes next.

At First People Housing, we’re here for both.
