Water Outage Compensation - Oakland Hamlet / IG7:
Following the recent water outages, including no water for over 24 hours on Friday/Saturday, 10–11 July 2026, and a further outage on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, Albion Water and Thames Water have been contacted and asked to award appropriate compensation to affected residents. Affected residents in Oakland Hamlet and other IG7 areas should receive correspondence from the relevant water company about compensation.
If you were planning to attend the Free Legal Advice Surgery at Grange Hill Community Centre, Burrow Road, Chigwell IG7 4HQ, on 18 July 2026 about a water outage compensation claim, please see the guidance below. You do not need to attend for this issue unless your case is unusual or you need help with another matter.
This may apply to customers of:
Albion Water
Essex & Suffolk Water
Thames Water
Please check your water bill to confirm your clean water supplier.
What to do
If you do not hear from your water company promptly, contact them and ask for compensation under the Guaranteed Standards Scheme.
Ask them to confirm:
when the outage started and ended;
whether it was planned or unplanned;
the cause of the outage;
whether compensation is payable;
how much will be paid and when;
whether they are relying on any exception; and
what alternative water supplies were provided.
You may also claim reasonable extra costs, such as bottled water or travel costs, if you have receipts or other evidence.
Deadline for claiming compensation
Compensation under the Guaranteed Standards Scheme should often be paid automatically. If it is not paid automatically, customers should make a claim to the water company within 3 months of the incident.
For the Oakland Hamlet / IG7 outages, the safest deadlines are:
Friday/Saturday outage, 10–11 July 2026: claim by 10 October 2026.
Tuesday outage, 14 July 2026: claim by 14 October 2026.
Residents should not wait until the deadline. A claim should be submitted as soon as possible if no automatic compensation letter or account credit is received.
Privacy reminder
Please do not post account numbers, full addresses, medical details or private information in this group.
Escalation
If the water company does not resolve the matter, the complaint can be escalated to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW).
Residents will receive a further update, and assistance with a draft formal claim will be provided on or before the next Legal Surgery on 15 August 2026 if the water companies fail to compensate residents in accordance with the Guaranteed Standards Scheme.
