Many landlords set up insurance when they first let a property… then barely look at it again.

The policy renews. The premium gets paid.

Life moves on.

But here’s the problem: your cover may no longer reflect your situation, or worse, may never have properly covered you in the first place.

One of the biggest mistakes landlords make is assuming standard home insurance covers a tenanted property. In many cases, it doesn’t. If your insurer doesn’t know the property is rented out, a claim could be rejected when you need it most.

Loss of rent cover catches people out, too. Most policies cover lost rent after floods or fires.

Many do NOT cover rent arrears if a tenant stops paying. That usually requires separate insurance.

Void periods are another risk. Some policies restrict cover after 30 or 60 days empty, which can become an issue between tenants or during refurbishment.

A quick policy review today could save a huge amount of stress later.
