Imagine if seeing and hearing this was just a normal day in your new home?

This is life at Cantick Head Lighthouse.

After many wonderful years here, we’ve decided it’s time for us to retire from the holiday cottage business and give someone else the chance to experience this extraordinary place.

Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing some of the incredible moments we’ve captured here — orca passing beneath the cliffs, seals just offshore, spectacular sunsets, the Northern Lights and the ever-changing waters of Scapa Flow.

But this raffle is about more than finding a new owner.

We’re also hoping to raise as much money as possible for four charities that mean a great deal to us:

Longhope Lifeboat Museum
Sophie’s Legacy
The Scarlet Foundation

And one person could win two cottages at Cantick Head Lighthouse for just £5 — or choose the £200,000 cash alternative.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌾 These are not clan names. They are the names of fields.

Orkney was Norse for six hundred years and never had a clan system at all. What it had was farms, and by the time surnames settled there the people simply took the name of the ground they worked. Corrigall is a farm in Harray. Marwick is a farm in Birsay. Flett, Isbister, Rendall, Sabiston, Twatt, Kirkness, Yorston, every single one is a place on the map before it is ever a person.

That is why an Orkney surname tells you more than almost any other name in Scotland. It does not tell you who your chief was. It tells you which few acres your people came off, often down to one steading you can still walk to on a Tuesday afternoon.

Thousands of these names went out to Hudson Bay with the Company, to Canada, to New Zealand, to the whaling. The farms stayed exactly where they were.

Somewhere in Orkney there is a field with your name on it.
