Which quote would you choose?

Always get 3 quotes. Right??? We sourced quotes to redecorate the exterior of a London property and received prices of:

🏠 £1,932
🏠 £3,500
🏠 £11,000

That's a staggering £9,068 difference for what was broadly the same job. Yet less than 50% of homeowners get more than 2 quotes.

The interesting part? Many people would instinctively choose the £3,500 quote. It's not the cheapest, not the most expensive, and we often associate a higher price with better quality.

At what point is DIY actually worth it?

We built our garden steps ourselves this summer instead of paying a £2,532 quote. Saved a chunk of money, but it took 6 days instead of the 5 we planned — hidden cavities, a dog with excellent aim at wet bricks, and more trips to Selco than we'd like to admit.

So we ran the numbers properly: at what day rate does DIY actually stop being worth it?

Turns out the breakeven is around £286/day — which is a salary of roughly £71,500 a year. Below that, doing it yourself beats paying someone. Above it, your time's worth more than the saving.
