Landlords: Is your portfolio compliant for the 31st May deadline?

We are nearly three weeks into the Renters’ Rights Act regime. Landlords who fail to act by the end of this month could face civil penalties of up to £7,000.

Here is what you need to do before 31st May:

1. Every tenant must be provided with the official new Government Information Sheet. Failing to do this can also prevent you from using legitimate possession grounds in the future.

2. If you have any tenancies that were previously verbal or lacked a formal written agreement, you are now legally required to provide a written statement of terms.

3. With the abolition of Section 21 and the shift to rolling tenancies, your paper trail is now your strongest asset. You need to keep a watertight paper trail of all onboarding and communication.
