🔥 There's that little change in the air…

The days are still bright and there's plenty of daylight left, but every now and then there's just enough of a chill in the evening to make lighting the stove rather tempting.

There's something lovely about coming back to your cottage after a day out, putting the kettle on, lighting the fire and settling in for the evening.

We're definitely not ready to say goodbye to summer just yet… but we have to admit, the return of cosy Melfort evenings isn't such a bad thing. 💚

👻🎃 Something spooky is coming to Oban this Halloween…

With the nights getting darker and autumn well and truly in the air, there’s no better time to discover a different side of nearby Oban.

On 30 & 31 October, Oban: The Dark Side takes you into the myths, legends, ghost stories and darker history hidden around the town and its ancient landscapes.

Hear tales of selkies and the Blue Men of the Minch, witches and mysterious healers, the Green Lady of Dunollie Castle, a ghostly Highland piper and the doomed wedding of 1463. You’ll also uncover stories surrounding Barcaldine Castle and the ancient Distillery Cave beneath Oban. 👻

🌰 Does anything take you back to childhood quite like finding the first conkers of the year?

We have a great big horse chestnut tree here at Melfort and the conkers are starting to fall — so naturally, we had to go hunting. 😄

There's still something ridiculously satisfying about cracking open that prickly green shell and finding a perfect, shiny conker hiding inside.

It might be a few years since some of us last went searching for them… but apparently the excitement hasn't worn off!

Did you collect conkers as a child — and more importantly, were you any good at conkers?

Now… where's the string? 😂🌰

☕🍰 Is there anything better than stopping for a little afternoon treat when you're on holiday?

Somehow there's always time for tea and cake when you're away… even if you definitely wouldn't stop for it on an ordinary day at home. 😉

Argyll has some fantastic little cafés, tearooms and cake stops — and we know many of our regular guests have their firm favourites.

So we're handing this one over to you…

🪨 Feature Friday: Kilmartin Glen

Sometimes it's easy to forget just how much history is sitting quietly in the landscape around us.

Kilmartin Glen is one of our favourite places to recommend for a day out from Melfort — a landscape filled with standing stones, burial cairns, stone circles and rock carvings, with thousands of years of human history beneath your feet.

Temple Wood is particularly special. It's one thing to read about people gathering here thousands of years ago; it's quite another to stand amongst the stones and try to imagine all the generations who have stood in the same place before you.

Then there's Kilmartin Museum, where some of the objects discovered in this extraordinary landscape are brought together.

The pot in our third photograph is around 4,000 years old and the only one of its kind in Britain and Ireland. But one of our favourite things comes when you turn away from the display…

Look through the window and you can see the burial chamber where it was found.

There's something rather wonderful about seeing an object made thousands of years ago and then looking straight out at the landscape it came from.

And perhaps even more exciting for us — the archaeology of this area comes much closer to home.

Hidden in the hills behind Melfort is a cave which has revealed evidence of some of the earliest people to have lived in this part of Scotland. It's a story we're hoping to explore much more closely in the future… 👀

In the meantime, if you haven't visited Kilmartin Glen and the museum during a stay at Melfort, we'd definitely add it to your list. 💚

“Such a wonderful 10 days at Melfort Village – beautiful cottages and so much to do.”

And what did they manage to fit into those ten days? Dolphins, seals, sea eagles, fishing on the loch, a visit to Gunpowder and, of course, plenty of time simply enjoying Melfort itself.

The view's sorted… now what's in your glass? 🍸

There's still plenty of time for sitting outside at Melfort — although we're reaching that lovely time of year when keeping a blanket over the back of the chair isn't a bad idea.

A comfortable seat, something nice to nibble on, a favourite drink and Loch Melfort stretching out in front of you…

We're not sure an evening needs much more.

The bottle in this particular picture is Lussa gin, but we're curious…

Something new is on the menu at Melfort tomorrow…

Safari & Stag are back — and this time they're bringing Filled Vetkoek with them for the first time!

If, like some of us, you're wondering what a Vetkoek actually is… it's a golden, fluffy South African fried dough, filled with your choice of:

🌶️ Bobotie – a mild, fruity minced beef curry
🐷 Smokey BBQ pulled pork
🌿 Vegetarian Moroccan pattie

And for those who've already found a favourite, their Boerewors Rolls are back too — homemade beef and pork sausage topped with tomato & onion gravy.

Add a portion of fries and possibly a pudding, and Monday dinner is sorted. 😋
