Sometimes the right conversation starts with the wrong vacancy.

Yesterday, four experienced property professionals got in touch after seeing vacancies on my website.

For two of them, once we'd talked things through, we agreed the role they'd originally enquired about wasn't quite the right fit.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about recruitment. A vacancy might start the conversation, but understanding what someone is really looking for is what leads to the best matches.

I'm now registering all four and looking for the right opportunities for them.

Sometimes the first opportunity isn't the right one...

When Roy first got in touch, he'd seen one of my vacancies and thought it might be the next step in his career.

After talking things through, it became clear it wasn't quite the right fit.

What he really wanted was a role where he could continue to develop, enjoy a better work-life balance for his young family, and be part of the right team.

Over the years, I've realised that the best placements don't start with a CV.

They start with a conversation.

Many of the people I've helped weren't actively looking for a new job when we first spoke.

Some stayed where they were.

Some moved a few months later.

Some came back years afterwards when the timing was right.

That's why I don't believe recruitment is about persuading people to move.

It's about listening, giving honest advice and helping people make the right decision for them.

Sometimes disappointment is simply the first step towards something better.

A few weeks ago, I spoke to someone who'd been overlooked for a role they genuinely believed was going to be theirs.
