📚 A LITTLE BOOKSHOP ON WHEELS IS COMING TO WHITCHURCH 📚

And she's bringing a rather lovely excuse to spend your Friday afternoon in the pub.

We're delighted to welcome The Wandering Chapter to The Black Bear on Friday 2nd October, ahead of Blackberry Fair in Whitchurch on Saturday 3rd October.

Housed in a lovingly converted pink van, The Wandering Chapter is an independent bookshop on wheels, bringing the joy of browsing books in person wherever she goes.

From 3pm–7pm, our courtyard garden will be home to Betsy, so you can have a wander through the books, find your next great read and settle in for a drink or something good to eat.

Whether you're a lifelong bookworm, looking for a new favourite author or simply fancy a browse, this is one Friday afternoon worth getting excited about.

🚤 Have you found our miniature canal boat yet? 👀

The Whitchurch Canal Festival is back this weekend, and The Black Bear is getting involved!

Following the canal breach last December, this year’s festival may look a little different, but there’s still plenty to look forward to, with floating traders, stallholders, local businesses and community groups coming together to celebrate everything that makes Whitchurch so special. ❤️

And there’s a new way to explore the town this year…

🚤 The Miniature Canal Regatta 2026!

Businesses, charities, schools and community groups have created their very own miniature canal boats, which will be displayed throughout Whitchurch as part of a colourful town-wide trail.

And yes… we have our very own boat! 🐻🚤

So, if you’re heading into the Whitchurch Canal Festival this Saturday 5th or Sunday 6th September, come and find The Black Bear boat, take a look at all the amazing creations and cast your vote for your favourite!

We’ve loved seeing so many local businesses and community groups getting involved, and now more than ever, it’s important that we support this brilliant local festival.

🌻 THE BLACK BEAR SUNFLOWER COMPETITION 2026 🌻

Another summer of growing, measuring, nurturing… and a little bit of friendly competition! 😂🌻

Our annual Sunflower Competition at The Black Bear has come to an end, and what a crop we’ve had this year! We’ve seen an amazing variety of sunflowers, including some absolute giants and a few that needed a little extra support along the way. 👀

But, most importantly, our sunflower growing has helped us raise money for Lymphoma Action 💛

So, without further ado, here are this year’s winners…

Today was a very special day at The Black Bear as our beautiful courtyard garden was judged by Heart of England Britain in Bloom in the Hospitality category!

Tucked away behind our pub is a true hidden gem. What was once a plain car park has been lovingly transformed into a vibrant and welcoming garden, bursting with colour throughout the seasons.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our head gardeners Michael, John and housekeeper Lynne, the courtyard has become a peaceful haven where customers can relax with a drink, enjoy a bite to eat and soak up the sunshine surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers.

The journey to create this space hasn't been without its challenges. From uncovering old stable footings to replacing hard tarmac with rich, fertile soil, Michael, John and Lynne's passion and determination have turned an ordinary space into something truly special.

We're incredibly proud to have shared their hard work with the Britain in Bloom judges today and are keeping our fingers crossed for the results!

We're looking for an Assistant Manager to join our team, working across two of our award-winning pubs, The Swan at Marbury and The Black Bear in Whitchurch.

The Swan at Marbury is a charming rural pub, serving seasonal British dishes made with the very best produce. The Black Bear is a characterful town centre pub at the heart of Whitchurch, offering quality pub classics in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

The perfect candidate will have previous experience in a management role within a busy pub environment. They will also thrive in being hands-on and will relish the challenge of having a big influence on how the business is driven forward. In return, you can be part of a friendly team that provides the opportunity to further your career in a growing, independent family-run pub company.

Our menus are on the traditional side and predominantly British, with traditional pub classics as well as seasonal dishes. We use fresh produce with the emphasis on quality, all cooked in house from our full induction kitchens. On the bar you will find an array of quality products including decent w**es that we blend and import ourselves and our own b**r, too!

One of the nicest things about a pub is seeing familiar faces through the week. Whether it's lunch with friends, a quiet pint after work or a catch-up over supper, those everyday visits are what make your local feel like home.

We know that, for many of us, those little trips to the pub have become something we think about a bit more these days. We'd hate for that to mean seeing less of you.

So, we've sat down and put our heads together and come up with something simple. Across all of our pubs, we're introducing a £10 dish that will change weekly, alongside a selection of our house drinks at lower prices, including our very own JPA bitter, house l***r and small glasses of our house tap red, white and rosé w**e.

There'll still be the same proper food, well-kept drinks and warm welcome you've come to expect. We're simply making it that little bit easier to enjoy those everyday pub moments.

Because pubs are for catching up, celebrating the little things and occasionally putting the world to rights over a pint.

Each of our pubs will be serving its own weekly dish, so whether you're popping into your local or visiting one of our other pubs, there'll always be something different waiting for you.
