LAKE CHAPALA IS HOLDING NEAR 70% OF ITS CAPACITY.

The latest public reading indicates approximately 5.5 billion cubic meters of water—about 69.6% of the lake’s total capacity.

That is encouraging news for Mexico’s largest lake and the communities that surround it.

But one percentage never tells the entire story.

Lake levels continue to change with rainfall, inflows, water use and evaporation. Near 70% does not mean its long-term environmental challenges have disappeared.
