BUXTONS -A NEW BRIGHTON TRADITION
Buxtons begain in 1903 , and they are still in the removal business, located in Pine Avenue South Brighton. Family owned and operated since 1903, the business has passed through four generations and is now in the hands of Andrew Buxton, a great-grandson of Joe Buxton the company founder.
Joseph Buxton started out on his own with a horse and dray, and later a lorry, and delivered coal, firewood, blocks of ice, shifted furniture, and levelled sections from the drifting sand. He ran a daily service to the city in all weathers. They took picnic parties from the city to the beach, and also took families with all their goods to their seaside cottages.
In 1930 a compact brick office was built at 76 Seaview Road. This office also dispensed fresh milk from their own cows until bottled milk replaced this service.
Joe’s son Russell entered into the partnership with his father, Joe, and they were together until Joe’s death in 1960 at age 85. Around that time Russell’s brother Colin joined the partnership for a few years. From Seaview Road, the business moved to 88 Hawke Street, in the 1960s (where the Pegasus Retirement Village is now)
2 of Russell’s 5 sons were now partners. From Hawke Street the business moved to Pine Ave, where Russell and his wife Elsie lived next door. Elsie served tea to the workers until her 87th year. The family were very well known in community and church committees, and they are still a name most residents will know.
