📰 Reefton Man Registers Pothole On Airbnb As “Rustic Lakeside Escape”

REEFTON — A Reefton resident has reportedly turned a large pothole outside his house into a profitable tourism venture after listing it on Airbnb as a “peaceful rustic lakeside escape with authentic West Coast character.”

Local man Ben Jahova said the idea came to him after noticing the pothole remained full of water for nearly three months.

“I figured if it’s gonna be there that long, it may as well start paying rent,” he said while placing a small wooden jetty made from pallet timber beside it.

The listing describes the pothole as “a tranquil micro-lake offering reflective water views and authentic West Coast ambience.”

Amenities listed include:

• Seasonal rainfall refilling

• Natural gravel shoreline

• Complimentary gumboots for shoreline exploration

• A deck chair overlooking the “lake”

According to Jahova, the listing received immediate interest from urban travellers seeking a “raw and authentic West Coast experience.”

“Had a couple from Timaru message asking if they could kayak it,” he said.

“I told them they might struggle to turn around, but technically yes.”

The Buller District Council confirmed it had received several complaints about the pothole but admitted repairs may take time due to funding constraints.
A council spokesperson said crews were currently “monitoring the situation.”

In the meantime, Jahova says he’s leaning into the opportunity.

“Thinking of adding paddleboards next,” he said.
“If it rains another week we might even qualify as a marina.”
