The Reserve Bank lifted the OCR to 2.75% this month, and the banks didn't waste any time passing it on. Every major bank moved floating mortgage rates up the full 0.25%, but most savings accounts only crept up 0.05%.

If you've got a term deposit, the maths isn't kind either. After tax, you're netting around 2.38% while inflation sits at 4.1%. That's money quietly losing value just sitting there.

Not every region in New Zealand is moving the same way right now. Canterbury, Otago and Southland are the only three regions to post House Price Index growth above 1% this year, and every single South Island region grew over the last three months while seven of the eight North Island regions slipped backward.

Canterbury's median price of $700,500 is the highest August figure on record since REINZ started tracking in 1992.

Christchurch City just posted a 3.3% jump in its median sale price in a single month, up to $691,000 in August. That's ahead of where we were a year ago too, even with fewer sales going through.

Nationally the story is different, prices slipped 1.3% and August recorded the sixth-lowest sales count in 35 years of REINZ history. Christchurch is moving the other way.
