This is one of many stories held in the chair. Through years of cuts, kōrero, laughter and trust, relationships get formed.

The reality of the space barbers hold, And when his life was coming to an end, Jess had the privilege of giving him his final shave.

No big words. No fixing. Just presence, aroha, and one last moment shared between two people who had walked a little piece of life together.

Sometimes that’s what holding space looks like.

For my homie Jess, that’s something she had to learn through experience. How to listen, how to hold space, how to recognise when something might not be right, and when to point someone toward more support.

For Jess from She Fades Arohas Way, barbering has always been about more than hair. It’s about whakawhanaungatanga, trust, listening and creating space for real kōrero.

As both a barber and kaiako, she’s also helping shape the next generation to understand that connection is part of the mahi too.

Loving sport means being honest about what is hurting it

Hope Is My Homeboy has always been about being the kind of friend who checks in, listens, holds space and stands beside you.

But a good friend also speaks up when something is not right.

This is not about tearing people down. It is about accountability, safer environments and protecting those who feel unable to speak.

Because the culture we tolerate today becomes the culture our young people inherit tomorrow. 🤎
