Tenants can now request to keep a pet in their rental property, and landlords can only decline if there are reasonable grounds. Pet consent must be given in writing, and landlords may set reasonable conditions as part of that consent.

For landlords, this can open the door to a wider pool of tenants while still allowing important things to be considered, such as property suitability, clear expectations, and how any pet-related damage beyond fair wear and tear is handled. Landlords can also charge a pet bond of up to two weeks’ rent.

For tenants, finding a home that suits both you and your much-loved pet can make all the difference, but written consent and agreed conditions are key.
