F is for Farmers Market 🌽🍯🌻

One of my favorite places in Aiken! Whether you're looking for fresh vegetables, baked goods, local honey, teas, hot sauces, handmade crafts, candles, woodworking, or just a fun morning out, you'll find it here.

Saturday mornings are bustling with people, but if you're looking for a quieter experience, Tuesdays and Thursdays are perfect for taking your time and chatting with vendors.

I love that it's right near downtown, making it easy to walk or bike to, and the fans under the market keep it surprisingly comfortable even on warm days.

It's more than a market—it's a piece of Aiken history and a great reminder of how special our community is. ❤️

1.Aiken is both a city and a county—and they're very different..
The county is almost the size of Rhode Island—so "Aiken" can be different worlds. Parts of the county are deeply rural and Southern, while the city is more historic and equestrian.
If you live in the city, you can be at restaurants, shops, and events within minutes. But if you live in the county, a 20–30 minute drive down scenic back roads to get anywhere .

2.Aiken is way more historic (and a little quirky) than people expect. Most people don't realize that Aiken became a winter escape for some of America's wealthiest families in the 1800s 1900s. Families like the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Hitchcocks came south to escape harsh northern winters, bringing with them polo, horse culture, and grand estates they casually called "cottages."

3.People stop for horses like they're traffic. In Aiken, it's completely normal to see horses crossing roads, getting stuck behind horses or riders trotting through town. Some neighborhoods even have horse trails and hitching posts. It's also not unusual to see riders going to their favorite restaurants... on a horse.

4.The downtown roads make no sense at first. Newcomers quickly discover Aiken's circles, squares, and one-way streets. You will see people traveling the wrong direction down a one way street because there are double lane one way streets separated by wooded areas in between. You'll see people making left turns on red in certain areas, which can be confusing until you learn the local rule: "Circles go, squares no.

5.There are dirt roads… on purpose. Yes, some roads in Aiken are intentionally left unpaved and they are in the center of the city. To create softer footing for horses and preserve the city's historic character. Newcomers are often shocked when their GPS sends them down a dirt road in the middle of town.

One of Aiken's best-kept summer traditions?
The concerts at Hopelands Gardens
It's magical

You wind beneath towering oak and magnolia trees, cross the bridge, follow the wavy brick wall, and suddenly find a special place where people of all ages gather with lawn chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy music in the park.

The performers play across the water as the sunsets, creating one of those magical Aiken moments that feels timeless.
And the best part? It's completely free.

This is the kind of place that makes Aiken, Aiken. Have you been to a summer concert at Hopelands Gardens?
