Big news for renters and first-time buyers: your on-time rent payments could now help you qualify for a mortgage. 👇
Here’s what’s happening — mortgage lenders just got the green light to use a new credit scoring model, VantageScore 4.0, for all Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–backed loans. Unlike the older model, it factors in rent, utility, and phone bill payment history, not just credit cards and loans.
Swipe through for what it actually means 👉
If you’ve been paying rent and bills on time but don’t have a long traditional credit history, this works in your favor. FHA is set to accept it too, starting January 1, 2027.
To be clear: lenders can still use Classic FICO if they choose — this just gives more borrowers a shot at being seen accurately.
Not sure how this affects your homebuying timeline? Let’s talk through what lenders will actually see when they pull your file.
